FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – They suit up in uniform tonight for the first time since that tough February Sunday at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Unfortunately, that Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks counted. But tonight’s preseason opener vs. the Indianapolis Colts certainly won’t.

In fact, as you may know by now, if you’re going you likely won’t see many players who saw significant time in the Super Bowl.

One who never made it on the field, reserve QB Tommy DeVito, re-signed with the Patriots and has had an excellent training camp, his first with the team. Remember, he was signed at the end of camp last year after the Giants cut him.

And now? He’ll probably get the start in tonight’s game as Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said the other day that it was unlikely starter Drake Maye would play. And DeVito is now No. 2 on the depth chart.

“I have no clue,” he said the other day after he hummed a 61-yard pass during the joint practice with the Colts. “My rookie year, I was told that morning how much I was playing in the game. I just prepare like I’m going to play the whole game, and whenever they tell you what you’re going to do, that’s how it is.”

DeVito has been the unsung story of camp, probably giving the Patriots a little security if Maye were to get hurt. It’s likely a matter of comfort, he says.

“That goes for everybody,” DeVito said. “Having more confidence going into year two, having been in so many situations last year, seeing how Drake played, just the growth from year two…”

“He continues to learn,” Vrabel said. “With it being a new system I think it got his attention a little bit better, as opposed to saying ‘Hey, I know what this is,’ and kind of taking it for granted.

“I think he’s really done a nice job. He did a nice job in the Blue-White scrimmage, operating and doing things exactly the way that Ashton (Grant) and Josh (McDaniels) are coaching these guys to do it. … Excited about where Tommy has been.”

DeVito says he loves being in New England.

“It’s not too far from home, it’s not too much culturally different,” DeVito said. “Boston is a little cleaner than New York, I will say that. Still finding my food spots though. …”

Tonight the Patriots, who officially christened the New Balance Athletic Center yesterday, hits his spots.

The Patriots also likely want to get a look at rookie QB Behren Moton out of Texas Tech.

Either way, Vrabel said, players who didn’t see much work in the joint practice “will get extensive work in the game … That’s just how it goes.”

One player you likely won’t see is Christian Barmore, who’s been out due to time management, the team being cautious with his previous blood clot issues.

“Just still trying to get him back knowing that we have some time and it’s a long season,” Vrabel said. “He’s played a lot of football for us. He was disruptive for us. We just have to make sure that we are smart about what we are doing right now.”
