NASHUA – Hell hath no fury like a Nashua’s James E.Coffey Post baseball team scorned.

The locals dropped a tough 7-2 decision at Exeter on Monday night only to bounce back by sweeping Salem, 9-0 and 8-3, knocking the visitors around Historic Holman Stadium with 24 hits.

The Coffey Kids, now 11-2, have the upper hand in a battle with Exeter (done at 11-4) for District B’s top seed, so every game counts double in this, the final week of the regular season.

“It was nice to see them respond today,” Nashua coach Norm Kerman said. “Kind of knowing the situation we’re in, heading into the tournament, the circumstances, coming out, really trying to put the foot down.”

And the hits up, starting with the return of Liam Ireland from a couple of days of personal leave, leading off the bottom of the first with a solo homer off Salem starter Kyle Bailey. It was the first of 13 Coffey hits, the second one being a double by Gavin Santos and third the RBI hit by Tyler Parks that drove him in to make it 2-0 after one.

While 13 hits is a big deal, so is the three hit pitching of Ben Geiger, who is headed to Ithica College after the season ends. He dominated yesterday, tossing a complete game three hitter, striking out eight with zippo walks. He’s playing on an All-Star team and that helps him be one as well.

“Again, the best players from high schools all around here, it’s a blast,” Geiger said. “It makes me even more confident, just go out there and throw strikes, and attack.”

Salem had one runner reach as far as third base, and that was in the top of the seventh. Meanwhile, Nashua broke it open with six runs on seven hits in the fourth to grab an 8-0 lead. Ireland, Nick Wyner, Jordy Delude, Mario Ramirez and Jacoby Caissie with RBI hits.

“We knew it was big to try to get some momentum,” Kerman said. “When we know we have the ability to really try to step on the gas pedal. It helps when we hit, but it really helps when we have Ben Geiger on the mound. It’s really fun to watch.”

It was fun to watch Ireland as he had three hits in the nightcap, including a double, and scored three runs. His former Bishop Guertin teammate, Gavin Santos, went 2 or 3 with two RBIs while Keenan Myers went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Aidan O’Connor got the win, allowing one earned run (two runs overall) over 4.2 innings with four walks and seven strikeouts. Salem grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first but Nashua grabbed the lead for good in the second, 3-2.
