NASHUA – Today’s weather should be perfect, so let’s play two.

Yes, the Nashua Silver Knights will have their first doubleheader of the season at Historic Holman Stadium vs. the Vermont Lake Monsters, thanks to Tuesday’s day-long rain.

The top team in the league, Vermont (24-10) will take on the Knights with Game 1 beginning today at 4 p.m. The second game will start about 40 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.

Who’s pitching? The Lake Monsters were slated to start Justin Sweeney last night; he was 0-0 but with a 0.77 ERA in five appearances, four of them starts.

Nashua was going with the combo of Ty Lohsen, who tossed six scoreless frames in his debut last week, and Matthew Donovan, who has a 2.25 ERA in four appearances. They were going to split the innings last night, so one might think they’ll combine for one game or Guarino will split them up and have each one start a game today.

The Silver Knights have most of their arms available as they are in the middle of a day off before with the rainout, and the team is also off on Thursday before Will Perkowski takes the ball on Friday at home vs. New Britain.

SWAMP BATS NEXT WEEK

Nashua’s exhibition vs. the NECBL’s Keene Swamp Bats is on Monday at HHS at 6:03 p.m. (Nashua ETV will air it live), and while it’s an exhibition, Guarino plans on playing it straight.

“We’re going to try to win the game,” Guarino said. “It’ll be exciting, it’ll be fun, it’ll be good to see some of the guys who were in the league last year and how they’ve progressed,” Guarino said. “Facing some high level competition, some Power Four schools, guys who are really talented, little bit older. These young guys are going to get good experienced throwing against a Jackson Marshall.”

Guarino knows the level may be higher in the NECBL, but the FCBL has players who would do fine there, including some on the Silver Knights.

“Aaron Forgues can pitch in that leauge,” Guarino said of his closer. “Connor Smith can play in that league. It’s just a matter of getting out there being found. This league’s no different.”

FLEX-IBLE

Tickets for Tuesday’s postponed game will automatically become flex tickets, meaning they can be redeemed for any remaining Silver Knights regular season home game.

STATS ‘N STUFF

Nashua has the top two hitters in the league with infielder A.J. Kolb (.370) and Smith (.352)….

The Knights’ Peter Keblinsky is third in the FCBL in RBIs with 23 while Smith is right behind him with 22…

Smith is second in homers with three…

Nashua’s Phoenix Williams is in a three-way tie for second with 18 stolen bases, while Smith was third with 15…

Nigel Cross is in a five-way tie atop the league with three wins, while Perkowski is tied for second with 27 strikeouts.

Forgues is in a tie for second with three saves. If the Knights are trailing late in either game, it’s a sure bet they’ll see the league’s save leader in Sam Labrecque (seven).
