Mickey Gasper had been a constant in the Boston Red Sox lineup, and was holding his own.

But the numbers crunch caught up to him, at least temporarily, as the former Merrimack High and Nashua Silver Knights standout was sent down to Triple A Worcester on Sunday, prior to last night’s game vs. the Yankees.

Gasper’s demotion was due to the Red Sox reinstating veteran infielder-outfielder Romy Gonzalez, who began the season on the IL after recovering from left shoulder surgery.

This Red Sox stint was much more productive than his first time in a Boston uniform two years ago. He played in 34 games and hit .243 (26 for 107) with five doubles, one triple and seven RBIs in 3 games. He made 13 starts at designated hitter, 12 as catcher, and two at first base.

Gasper, 30, was hitting .296 with six doubles, six homers and 27 RBIs with Worcester before the Red Sox called him up in early May. He was playing for the manager he had most of his time this year in Triple A, Chad Tracy, who took the interim Sox job after Alex Cora was fired. Thus it’s probably only a matter of time before he’s promoted back to the Majors.

This was Gasper’s second tenure in the Red Sox organization, which he became a part of in December of 2023 , plucked from the Yankees in the Rule V Minor League draft. After a couple of stints in Boston he was traded Christmas Eve to Minnesota.

He made the Twins roster out of 2025 spring training, and went between Triple A and the Majors before ending the season with the big club.

But the Twins designated him for assignment in January, the Washington Nationals claimed him but shortly thereafter waived him and Boston scooped him up.

Worcester is at Syracuse this week. Gasper is also one of this year’s Lions Club Sports Legends of Holman Stadium Hall of Fame inductees Saturday, but was expected to be in Anaheim with the Red Sox. Instead, he’ll likely still have to be inducted at a later date as the WooSox are at Syracuse.
