They flipped the script. Literally.

There’s nothing like a loss to the Lowell Spinners to bring the best out in the Nashua Silver Knights, right?

Remember how dead things looked Thursday night?

Watching the team that lost 1-0 to the Spinners with just two hits, you’d never imagine a scene like Connor Smith’s bat flip Saturday night after a gone-as-soon-as-it-left-the-bat ball hit deep over the brick wall to the left field picnic area in Historic Holman Stadium’s most picturesque spot.

After being held to two hits by the Spinners Thursday night, in 48 hours Nashua changed back into an offiensive force vs. the Norwich Sea Unicorns with 14 hits in an 11-1 romp.

So we’re asking the real Silver Knights to please stand up. Maybe they just did last night, because something changed from Thursday.

“Honestly, just bringing the team together,” Nashua’s A.J Kolb, who had five hits and scored three runs last night.

“We’ve had some good talks, getting the energy better in the locker room, knowing we’re a good team, we’re a great hitting team. The pitching has been coming along every single game and we just had to get back to where we were earlier in the season hitting-wise.”

The manager gave whatever the players did to turn it around the big thumbs up.

“That’s all stuff on their own there,” Silver Knights manager Nick Guarino said. “We don’t know anything about that. That’s all player stuff, which is cool.

“We talked to them the other day, talked to the hitters the other day, and two wins in a row.”

Guarino had a worried look on his face Thursday, as he should. But remember, he has the scars from last year’s collapse, when a lot of players had one cleat out the door. Thursday’s third straight loss had to be conjuring up those feelings. He doesn’t want a team he’s managing to lose its desire again.

“The compete factor is there. I think the big thing is they kind of want to be here,” Guarino said last night. “The energy is back. And today it got kind of chippy, it was fun to see, it was a fun baseball game.”

Here’s the deal: This team is better than last year’s. It’s got multiple parts that can do multiple things. It’s got a stud left fielder in Smith, who last Sunday made a great catch against that same brick wall he boomed his homer over last night.The kid from Pittsburgh has talent. The last player we saw like this was Kyle Wolff, whose homer won Nashua the 2022 title.

They haven’t been back to the playoffs since.

Last night they took advantage of some lousy pitching. Things can change quickly in this league. The Knights need to put a run together, and wins vs. Norwich and Westfield are huge because those are the teams Nashua is closest to in the standings. Three teams won’t make the playoffs. One would think Lowell, despite Saturday’s win over Vermont, would be one. But still too early to make that call.

“You show up and want to play, the talent’s there,” Guarino said. “That’s what summer ball is. The guys who show up are the teams that win.”

Silver Knight fans hope a bat wasn’t the only thing that was flipped last night.
