NASHUA – Sunday was one of those “feel good” days at Historic Holman Stadium for the Nashua Silver Knights.

There was a great Father’s Day crowd of 2,056 on hand, many of whom did not let the passing thunderstorm and half hour interruption upset their outing.

And what do you know, the Knights pulled out a close game, topping the Worcester Bravehearts 3-1. After which families went out to play catch on the field, an annual Father’s Day tradition with the team.

“We won a close game finally, which was good,” Knights manager Nick Guarino said. “We didn’t make too many mistakes … the pitching was good.”

Exactly, especially when the Silver Knights (10-11) made the most of just four hits.

A big part of the reason for the win was the five innings of shutout ball Nashua starter Nigel Cross tossed. He allowed four hits, struck out four but the real key was zero walks.

“I felt I was getting on the mound a little bit better,” Cross said. “The preparation was there today. Rain delays don’t bother me much unless it cancels the game. I’m ready to get back out there and do what I’ve got to do to get the guys in front.”

He was coming off a rough start last weekend vs. Worcester. “Bounced back, pretty good,” Guarino said. “That’s how it usually is. … Same team, he knew what he did last time, threw too many fastballs. This time he mixed it up a lot more, and got ahead with the off-speed and used the fastball later in counts.”

And the Knights got four good innings from the bullpen. Worcester’s only run came in the top of the seventh trailing 3-0 when Gabe Malaret tripled down the right field line leading off the seventh vs. Josh Florence in his second inning and scored on Benny Hess’s ground out to second. Two more reached in the inning for the Bravehearts, but a 5-6-3 double play ended the threat. Jameson Dobis didn’t let two walks hurt him and Aaron Forgues, headed to William & Mary in the fall, pitched a scoreless ninth allowing one soft hit for his first save.

The offense? Well, Nashua scored a run in the second when Nate Kearney got his second triple in the last two games and scored on Hunter Troiano’s ground out.

In the fifth, Nashua got to Worcester lefty starter Jake Shaughnessy for two runs when Jordan Welch singled and Phoenix Williams doubled. Welch scored on Ben Peterson’s sac fly and Williams came home on a passed ball to give Nashua that 3-0 lead.

Simple, but effective.

Now it’s another day off today – the team’s third in the last four days, thanks to a rainout in Vermont Friday night – before a stretch of eight straight games that begins Tuesday at Lowell.

“Enjoy the off days, because you’re not going to have too many of them the rest of the year,” Guarino said.

But they’ll probably have a lot more close games, which now the Knights know they can win.
