NASHUA – It’s time to get back to work, Nashua Silver Knights.

That’s what today will be for the local FCBL nine as they take the field for the first time in two days, thanks to a rainout Friday and scheduled day off on Saturday.

They also have Monday off, than an stretch of eight straight days with a game. But today at Historic Holman Stadium they’ll take on the 11-7 Worcester Bravehearts who beat them back-to-back at Holy Cross’ Fitton Field just over a week ago by a grand total of three runs.

And that’s the thing, the Knights (9-11) will be looking to win any way they can, but close games have been their bugaboo.

“We’re in every game and we know that, even if our pitching in a game isn’t that great our lineup is going to come in and produce runs,” Silver Knights manager Nick Guarino said. “It’s just a matter of eliminating the mental mistakes.”

Nine of Nashua’s 11 losses are by less than three runs, six are two runs or less and four are one-run.

“They’re all close games that we lose,” Guarino said. “Every game I can come up and say, ‘Hey, we made this mental mistake in the third inning, it cost us a run or two.’ That’s how you lose a baseball game.

“We’re competing with every team in the league. We botched some things here or there that we’ve got to clean up.”

And seven of the team’s nine wins are by three runs or more. “Our wins are in dominant fashion,” Guarino said. “We’re blowing teams out. That’s when we play clean baseball.”

The other thing too is six of Nashua’s nine wins are vs. Lowell, whom the Knights see five more times this season, including this Tuesday.

NEW YORK STATE OF MIND

Silver Knights broadcaster/media relations staffer Rico Brill had quite the experience last weekend.

Brill was on hand in New York City for the celebration as well as the mayhem a week ago Saturday night when the Knicks won the NBA championship, beating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 in Texas.

“From the start of the game, you couldn’t get anywhere,” Brill said. “Every street had people on the outside watching on TVs. You couldn’t get into a bar. The funny thing is, a lot of the TVs were delayed. So you’d race to find one that was most active because people would hear cheers and get ticked off.

“Every single game (the Knicks) came back, so people were just waiting for it, and when they did, it was insanity.”

Brill, who is from Brooklyn, was outside in Carol Gardens, a Brooklyn neighborhood. Whey they won it, it was bedlam.

“People were jumping on cars, people were jumping on traffic lights, climbing all the way up,” he said. “Police were getting into it with people a little bit but even some of them were celebrating. I think most of the madness was in Manhattan, closer to MSG (Madison Square Garden).”

Here’s the funny thing: Brill isn’t a Knicks fan, but a Brooklyn Nets fan.

“I’ve had a little bit of a weird relationship my whole life (with New York basketball),” he said. “I grew up going to Nets games, I live 15 minutes from Barclay Center, they came (to Brooklyn) right when I was getting into sports. But I have had periods of times when I liked the Knicks. Back in the day with Ron Baker, Tim Hardaway Jr., that whole group. It was nice to see two former Nets, (Landry) Shamut and (Mikal) Bridges get rings.

“But I felt a little like an imposter though. But you know a lot of people there aren’t lifelong Knick fans … but it’s all Knicks. I’ve never seen the city unified over anything like this. When Biden (former President Joe) won (in 2020), I thought that was a crazy celebration in the street. This one was crazier.”

Here’s the thing: Despite the mayhem, Brill still found time to go get the info out on the Silver Knights game that night.

WEEK AHEAD

Today is one of the fan highlights of the season, as dads will get a free necktie and then dads and families will be able to go on the Holman outfield and play catch…

Nashua has Monday off, then visits Lowell on Tuesday night, at Worcester Wednesday night, then will be back at Holman for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday night homestand.
