Rivier Roundup: Women’s lax ousted in quarters; splits for baseball, softball

STANDISH, Maine – The Rivier women’s lacrosse team suffered a 16-3 setback to Saint Joseph’s (Me.) in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinals Saturday morning at the SJC Athletic Complex.
The Raiders finish their season with an 8-10 record, while the Monks improved to 13-3 and move on the semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Joseph’s scored six unanswered goals in the opening quarter to take control early, holding Rivier off the board through the first.
The deficit grew in the second as the Monks added four more goals to take a 10-0 lead into halftime, with the Raiders unable to break through offensively.
Saint Joseph’s continued to add on in the third with three more goals. Rivier generated a few opportunities but remained scoreless heading into the fourth.
The Raiders got on the board early in the fourth as first-year Kaycie Hudon scored off an assist from junior Sofia Cebrero. After three Monks goals, Rivier added two late goals from sophomore Brooke Carter and first-year Hayleigh Young to close out the scoring.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
Young and first-year Chloe Waldron led the team with three ground balls each.
Young, Waldron, and sophomore Taylor Rioux caused three turnovers each.
Young led the team with two draw controls, setting a single season record with 79 on the year.
First-year Arrianna Imbriano made seven saves.
BASEBALL
RAIDERS SPLIT WITH DEAN
The Rivier baseball team dropped game one in extra innings, 6-3, before bouncing back to shut out Dean, 4-0, in game two of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Harvey Woods.
With the result, the Raiders moved to 13-20 (6-12 GNAC), while the Bulldogs moved to 20-14 (11-9 GNAC).
Dean 6, Rivier 3 (9 inn.)
The Bulldogs came out swinging, plating two runs in the first inning on a clutch two-RBI single.
The Raiders answered right back in the bottom of the first, evening things up at 2-2. Junior Sebastien Reis ripped a single to left-center to bring home Colton Colleran, and senior Dylan Aliberti followed with a sacrifice fly that sent Liam Stott across the plate.
Dean grabbed the lead again in the seventh, but the Raiders refused to back down. In the bottom half, Aliberti worked a bases-loaded walk to force in Colleran and send the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth, the Bulldogs exploded in the ninth for three runs and slammed the door on the Raiders to secure an exciting 6-3 win.

Colton Colleran went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
Dylan Aliberti drove in two runs, while Innerfield and Reis each added an RBI…Senior Owen Medlock recorded one stolen base…Senior Anthony Morro, Travis McKeen, first-year EJ Baker, and junior Sean Kuhlhoff combined for nine strikeouts.
Rivier 4, Dean 0 (7 inn.)
The Raiders opened the game hot, scoring three unanswered runs in the first inning. Colleran capitalized on a wild pitch to get things started. Reis followed with an RBI double to right field to bring home junior Nathan Innerfield, and sophomore David Miller added an RBI single to score Reis.
Rivier extended their lead by one in the third by way of a Reis RBI single to left field, scoring Innerfield.
Junior Chris Volino tossed a complete game, earning his fifth win of the year with five strikeouts…Colleran went 4-of-4 with one run scored.
Innerfield went 1-of-3, drawing a walk while crossing the plate twice.
Reis went 2-for-3 with a double, one run scored, and two RBI.
The Raiders are back in action on the road for a conference doubleheader with Elms this afternoon at Mackenzie Stadium. First pitch is set for noon, and game two is set for 3 p.m.
SOFTBALL
RIVIER SPLITS WITH SAINT JOE’S (CONN.)
The Rivier softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday afternoon at Raider Diamond, falling 3-1 in the opener before rallying for an 8-7 extra-inning walk-off victory in game two.
With the split, the Raiders finished the regular season at 15-21 overall and 11-7 in GNAC play, while the Blue Jays moved to 23-17 on the season (11-7 GNAC)
Saint Joseph (Conn.) 3, Rivier 1
Both teams traded scoreless innings through the first two frames before Saint Joseph broke through with three runs in the third, capitalizing on an error and RBI hits
Junior Hailey Berube settled in after the third and held the Blue Jays scoreless over the final four innings to keep Rivier within striking distance.
The Raiders threatened in both the fourth and sixth innings but were unable to break through against Blue Jays
Rivier mounted a final push in the seventh as senior Avry Nelson, first-year Emma Politz, and senior Kylee Caetano loaded the bases.
Senior Olivia Couto lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Nelson and cut the deficit to 3-1. The Raiders brought the tying run to the plate, but Saint Joseph held on to claim the opener.
Caetano and senior Hayley Rapaglia each recorded two hits to lead the offense…Couto drove in Rivier’s lone run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly…Berube tossed a complete game, allowing just one earned run while striking out three…Rivier outhit Saint Joseph 8-5 in the contest.
Rivier 8, Saint Joseph (Conn.) 7 (8 inn.)
Saint Joseph plated a run in the first, but the Raiders answered with three in the bottom half behind a two-run double from senior Hayley Rapaglia and an RBI single from junior Hayleigh Silva.
The Blue Jays responded with four runs in the second to take a 5-3 advantage.
Rivier surged back in the fourth, scoring three runs to reclaim a 6-5 lead, highlighted by an RBI single from Caetano and a Saint Joseph error that brought home two more runs.
Berube came on in relief and delivered 5.2 strong innings to keep the Blue Jays off balance.
Saint Joseph tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to force extras.
The Blue Jays pushed across a run in the eighth to take a 7-6 lead.
In the bottom half, first-year Savannah Steiner delivered a clutch pinch-hit RBI single to tie the game before Politz lifted a walk-off sacrifice fly to score junior Sophia Quinlan and secure the 8-7 victory.
Caetano and Couto each recorded two hits in the win…Rapaglia drove in two runs…Politz drove in the game-winning run, while Steiner delivered the game-tying RBI single in the eighth…Berube struck out five in a stellar relief appearance.
The Raiders await seeding for the upcoming GNAC Softball Championship Tournament set to begin on Wednesday evening.
