The stage was the biggest he’s ever been on in his young life, but Nashua’s Jack Young, age 11, stood tall.

Young shot 22 of 25 free throws to finish tied for fourth Saturday in the Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals in Chicago’s Wintrust Arena.

“So proud of Jack on the big stage,” Adam Young, Jack’s father, texted from the event. “He was so close.”

The winning score in the age 10-11 division was 25 out of 25, and runners up were 23 of 25.

Young qualified for the event with wins at the Nashua, district, state and regional level. His regional score was the same as yesterday, 22 of 25.

He’s the second Nashuan to compete in the Hoop Shoot Nationals in the last four years, and the 14th known Telegraph area competitor overall over several years.

Lexi McGuire, Steve Piwowarski, Missy Ayotte, Debra Killmon, Ellen Tipping, Ryan Robinson, Ryan Sullivan , Michael Panagoulias, Caleb Donnelly, Max Coleman, Tom O’Hearn of Hudson and Tilak Patel of Nashua all competed over the years. Only Donnelly came away with a National Championship, and his name is inscribed at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
