Rivier Roundup: Welcome home, softball; lax teams, baseball also win

NASHU – The Rivier softball team earned a pair of non-conference victories over Anna Maria on Tuesday evening at Raider Diamond, taking game one 3-1 before erupting for a 9-1 win in game two.

With the sweep, the Raiders improved to 3-9 on the season, while the AMCATS fell to 7-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rivier struck first in the bottom of the first inning as first-year Emma Politz scored on an RBI single from senior Olivia Couto.

The Raiders held a narrow lead through four innings behind strong pitching and defense. In the fifth, Couto delivered again with an RBI double to extend the lead to 2-0.

Rivier added an insurance run in the sixth inning when junior Liv Harnish doubled home senior Hayley Rapaglia.

Anna Maria plated its lone run in the seventh, but the Raiders closed it out to secure the win.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN

Couto led the offense with two hits and two RBI…Rapaglia added two hits, while Harnish recorded a key RBI double…Junior Hailey Berube was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowing just one run on five hits.

Rivier 9, Anna Maria 1 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anna Maria took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning before Rivier quickly responded.

The Raiders plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control.

After a scoreless third, Rivier exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning.

Couto sparked the rally with a two-RBI double, followed by RBI doubles from senior Avry Nelson and Rapaglia.

Harnish added an RBI single before junior Sophia Quinlan capped the inning with a two-run home run, the first of her collegiate career.

Rivier shut the door in the fifth to secure the run-rule victory.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN

The Raiders totaled 13 hits in the game.

Quinlan led the charge with a home run and two RBI.

Couto went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while senior Kylee Caetano collected three hits.

Rapaglia earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run over four innings

BASEBALL

RIVIER 5, LESLEY 3

The Raiders improved to 5-8 (1-1 GNAC) with a road win, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and outhitting Lesley 10-4 in Lexington, Mass.

Dylan Aliberti tripled in a run while other RBI hits went to Liam Stott (three hits), Jayce Martinez (two RBIs), and Alex Gallicano.

John Horgan got the win on the mound with six innings of two-hit shutout ball, walking two and fanning one. Ty Baker tossed a third of an inning to get the save.

MEN’S LACROSSE

RIVIER 23, REGIS 3

The Raiders stormed past Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Regis Joanne Merrill Field, improving to 8-0 (4-0 GNAC), while the Pride fell to 3-3 (2-2 GNAC).

Rivier wasted little time setting the tone, opening the game with six unanswered goals in the first quarter. Sophomore Aiden Conley struck first at 12:59, finishing a feed from classmate James DelPrete. Sophomore Mason Schultz followed with a pair of goals, while first-year Conor Walsh added a tally of his own. Two more goals from Conley helped the Raiders build a commanding 6-0 lead at the end of the opening period.

Rivier extended the advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Regis 8-1. Walsh and Schultz combined for four goals in the first seven minutes of the second quarter. First-year Henri Brochu logged his first goal of the contest at 5:33 followed by first-year Colin Foley finding the back of the net to give the Raiders a 12-0 lead. The lone Pride goal of the half came with 3:01 remaining, as Jack Jaynes finished an assist from Luke Meelia to break the shutout. Brochu and junior Cole Ronalter responded late with two more goals to carry a 14-1 lead into halftime.

Rivier’s offensive pressure continued after the break, with seven goals in the third quarter. First-year Andrew Nee scored twice in the period, including a man-up goal at 10:11. Sophomore Tyler Zehr, senior Sean Callinan, Conley, Schultz, and DelPrete each found the back of the net down the stretch, giving the Raiders a 21-2 edge. Regis added its second goal of the game at 8:31 when Alex Dougenik capitalized on a turnover and scored unassisted.

The fourth quarter saw Rivier maintain control, adding two goals from first-years Cooper Goodman and Payton Kender at 13:32 and 9:59, respectively. The Pride closed the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 5:50 mark, rounding out the 23-3 final.

Schultz and Walsh paced the offense with seven points each…Sophomore Liam Conley recorded a team-high 11 ground balls and went 13 of 16 from the face-off circle…First-year Logan Layton, junior Robert Heaton, and senior Scott Miller each caused two turnovers…Sophomores Jake Lydon and Will Corton, and junior Lucas Fitts combined for the win, stopping a combined seven shots in the process.

The Raiders return to action Saturday for a rematch of the 2025 GNAC Championship matchup with Lasell at 3:30 p.m. at Grellier Field in Newton, Mass.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

RIVIER 21, MITCHELL 2

The Rivier women’s lacrosse team dominate in its midweek Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road matchup at Alumni Field to improve to 3-5 (2-3 GNAC), while the Mariners fell to 0-4 (0-2 GNAC).

Rivier jumped out to a fast start, netting three goals in a 1:35 span to open the contest. Junior Shaelyn Burke opened the scoring at the 13:38 mark off a feed from classmate Sofia Cebrero. Cebrero followed with a goal of her own moments later before recording her second tally just 39 seconds after that to give the Raiders a 3-0 advantage. Mitchell answered at 10:31 to cut the deficit to two, but Rivier closed the quarter with authority, scoring four goals over the final seven minutes. First-years Kaycie Hudon and Chloe Waldron found the back of the net 1:56 apart to extend the lead to 5-1. Hudon added her second of the frame before senior Ashley Talbot capped the quarter with her first goal of the season, sending the Raiders into the second quarter up 7-1.

The Raiders continued to control play in the second quarter. First-year Alissa Eddy opened the scoring with a women-up goal at 12:50. Talbot added her second goal of the afternoon before the Mariners recorded their second tally of the game. Rivier responded with a late surge as Waldron and Cebrero scored over the final 3:09, pushing the Raiders’ lead to 11-2 heading into halftime.

Sophomore Ashlynn Ledoux set the tone early in the third quarter, scoring on a women-down possession to give Rivier a 10-goal cushion. Eddy later assisted sophomore Brooke Carter on her first goal of the day before Ledoux added her second of the afternoon. First-years Olivia Wheeler and Emma Finch followed with goals of their own, and Burke closed out the quarter with her second tally to make it 17-2.

Rivier added four more goals in the final quarter to seal the victory. Finch scored her second of the game before first-year Hayleigh Young notched her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 19-2. Waldron added another tally, and Eddy capped the scoring to secure the Raiders’ 21-2 win.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN

Cebrero led the team with six points on three goals and three assists. Eddy followed close behind with five points via two goals and three assists.

First-year goalkeeper Arrianna Imrbiano recorded a team-high four ground balls while stopping six shots.

Nine different Raiders caused a turnover in the contest…Young posted a team-high four draw controls.

The Raiders return to action today for a non-conference bout with VTSU-Castleton at 5 p.m. at Joanne Merrill Field.
