A week ago, former Merrimack High and Nashua Silver Knights standout Mickey Gasper was playing in the World Baseball Classic for Team Italy.

Now, a week later, it looks like he’ll be playing for Team Worcester – as in the WooSox, the Red Sox Triple A affiliate.

Gasper on Monday was optioned to minor league camp by the Red Sox, as it looks like he’ll being the season at Triple A.

He made the Minnesota Twins out of spring training a year ago, but that wasn’t the case this spring with the Sox, who claimed him off waivers from the Washington Nationals.

With the Sox this spring, Gasper, a catcher-infielder, played in 16 games and was 10 for 29 at the plate, good for a .345 clip with a triple, two doubles, two homers and seven RBIs and an OPS of 1.062. He joined infielder-outfielder Nate Eaton and catcher Matt Thaiss as players sent down.

It certainly seems like he’ll be one of the first callups as a position player and when he was with the Red Sox two years ago, manager Alex Cora liked his versatility. But for now, it looks like Polar Park will be his home to start the season until his likely return to Fenway.

Boston opens up the 2026 regular season at Cincinnati on Thursday.
