College Notes: Rivier’s Lydon Goalie of Week; HB alum Stapelfeld ties career high

NASHUA — Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Lydon has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time in his career, the conference announced this week.

Lydon turned aside 20 of the 25 shots he faced in Saturday’s 8-5 win over non-conference, intrastate foe Plymouth St. at Joanne Merrill Field. The Rowley, Mass. native’s 20-save outing marked the program’s highest single-game total since the 2023 season.

Lydon and the Rivier men’s lacrosse team return to action Saturdayfor a non-conference matchup with Curry. The opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Joanne Merrill Field.

STAPELFELD LEADS SAINT JOE’S (Me.) IN TOURNEY WIN

Second-seeded Saint Joseph’s College (16-10) cruised past #7 University of Saint Joseph (8-18), 87-47, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinal on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center in on Wednesday evening.

Former Hollis Brookline standout Elisabeth Stapelfeld tied her career high of 27 points.to lead the way. She shot 11 of 17 with three rebounds and three steals.

With the victory, Saint Joseph’s advances to the second round of the GNAC Tournament and will host #6 Albertus Magnus College in a conference semifinal on Friday at 5:00 PM. Albertus Magnus advanced to the second round after notching a 65-60 upset victory at #3 Regis College earlier this evening.
