UNH Roundup: Milestone for DeChent; men’s hoop falls
BALTIMORE – Junior guard Eva DeChent (Westchester, N.Y.) scored a team-high 15 points and her 1,000th career point but the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team was defeated 61-44 by UMBC at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Saturday.
DeChent, who entered the game with 988 career points, reached the milestone with a layup at 5:22 of the fourth quarter. She also had four rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.
Senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat (Barcelona, Spain) finished with 10 points and team-high six rebounds.
UMBC was led by Delaney Yarborough (21 points) and Jade Tillman (13).
UNH moves to 8-17 overall and 2-10 in America East. UMBC is now 12-12, 7-5.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
UMBC 85, UNH 63
Redshirt freshman guard R.J. Kennedy scored a team-high 15 points in a loss to UMBC at Lundholm Gym.
Kennedy had an impressive shooting day as he made 4 of 5 field goals, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, and made all four free throw attempts.
Junior guards Comeh Ebuobor and Jack Graham both scored 13 points while redshirt sophomore forward Belal El Shakery pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
UMBC’s DJ Armstrong and Jah’Likai King led five Retrievers who scored in double digits with 17 points apiece. The were followed by Caden Diggs (15), Josh Odunowo (12) and Ace Valentine (10).
UNH moves to 8-16 overall and 4-7 in America East while UMBC is now 16-8, 9-2. UNH returns to action Thursday at UMass Lowell.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
UNH 3, UMAINE 0
The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey skated past the University of Maine (11-18-4, 7-12-4 HEA) at Alfond Arena.
Neither team broke through offensively in the opening 20 minutes, leaving the 0-0 score intact. Following the first, Maine holds the edge on the shot chart with nine tries on net compared to seven from the Wildcats.
Both defenses held on in the second frame, keeping the game knotted at 0-0. Through the period, New Hampshire outpaced the Black Bears on offense, leading the shot chart 17-to-9 and taking a 24-to-18 edge overall.
The Wildcats broke open the scoring 4:32 into the third period, when Callista Printz (Buffalo, N.Y.) fired home for her first goal of the season.
New Hampshire doubled the lead just under eight minutes later while shorthanded when Nina Rossi picked up a turnover in the neutral zone, skating in on the Maine net and beating Kiia Lahntinen with a deke in front before flipping the puck in off the backhand.
Addison Spitz iced the game for the ‘Cats with 2:52 to play on an empty-netter.
MEN’S HOCKEY
BU 5, UNH 3
Sophomore forward Cam MacDonald, sophomore forward Ryan MacPherson, and junior forward Nick Ring each scored for the Wildcats, but the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team fell to Boston University at Agganis Arena in Hockey East action. The two teams split the home-and-home series as the Wildcats won 4-1 on Friday in Durham.
Junior defenseman Brendan Fitzgerald (North Reading, Mass.) tallied three assists for three points, while senior goalie Kyle Chauvette of Goffstown made 29 saves for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats fall to 12-15-1 (6-11-1 Hockey East), while the Terriers improve to 14-15-2 (10-11-0 Hockey East).
Next week the Wildcats will play a home-and-home series with No. 19 UMass on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21.
