WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UCONN 5, UNH 1

The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey fell to No. 6 UConn (22-7-2, 15-5-1 HEA) on Friday afternoon at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.

UConn found the early lead just 1:12 into the opening period, when Ashley Allard collected the loose puck off a try from Claire Murdoch, firing home for the 1-0 edge. The Huskies doubled their advantage midway through the frame, when Livvy Dewar fired home on a rebound in the slot with three seconds remaining on the power-play, putting Connecticut ahead 2-0.

UConn went ahead 3-0 midway through the second when a shot from Sadie Hotles got lost in traffic in the crease, before deflecting off a defender into the net.

New Hampshire broke onto the scoreboard with 7:49 to play in the second period, when Danika Botterill won the face-off in the UConn zone, putting the puck on net before a redirect in front from Nina Rossi pushed it back to the stick of Botterill, who fired home to make it a 3-1 contest.

With 4:52 to play in the third, UConn grabbed their fourth of the game when Julia Pellerin found Meghan Woodworth skating in the slot, who buried one past Sedona Blair (Eden Prairie, Minn.) to extend the lead.

The Huskies extended their lead 39 seconds later when Hotles fired on a second chance rebound opportunity, bringing about the 5-1 final.

The Wildcats conclude their season series with Maine (11-17-4, 7-11-4) at Alfond Arena in Orono, Me. when the Wildcats visit the Black Bears for a 2 p.m. puck drop.
