He’s back home — more or less.
Former Merrimack High School and Nashua Silver Knights standout Mickey Gasper is back with the Boston Red Sox, whom he spent the latter part of the 2024 season with after tearing apart the minor leagues.
Gasper was claimed on waivers Wednesday by the Sox from the Washington Nationals, who had scooped up Gasper from the Twins after Minnesota had designated him for assignment last month.
Gasper hit .158 with two homers, 11 RBIs and a .488 OPS. The Twins used him as a catcher, as he caught 122 innings. But Gasper can also play first, the outfield and second base, and his versatility was what made him a favorite of Red Sox manager Alex Cora when he was at Fenway.
Gasper could float between Triple A Worcester and Boston as a depth piece. He tore Triple A apart in Worcester two years ago and was hitting .400 when he got the call on an August Monday to head to Fenway. That night he took a walk to keep an extra inning rally alive in a Boston win. But he went 0-for-18 with eight strikeouts and four walks.
Many may forget Gasper began his career with several years in the Yankees system, as he was drafted by them in 2018 in the 27th round. He played five seasons with the Yankees, mostly at Double A Somerset.
Gasper was traded to the Twins on Christmas Eve, 2024. And he had career milestone moment when he made the Twins out of spring training.
It will be interesting to see how this spring training, which starts next week, goes. But either way, Gasper is a Red Sox again.
