FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The L.A. Chargers are coming to Gillette Stadium next Sunday night, so what’s the New England Patriots’ approach?
“Well, we’ll get ready, get rolling and try to do what we do every week which is prepare, figure out who we have available, what we feel like the keys are going to be, try to practice and be ready to go,” Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said after Sunday’s 38-10 regular season-ending win over the Miami Dolphins.
“That’s all we’ve done all year and it’s all we’ll be able to do this week in the playoffs.”
Patriots tight end Hunter Henry will be facing his old team, but it’s been several years now since he’s been a Charger.
“They have a lot of good players over there,” Henry said. “Obviously, I know a few of them and they will be a big challenge.”
Patriots safety Jaylinn Hawkins remembers the brutal rain-soaked 40-7 loss to the Chargers two days after Christmas last year at Gillette.
“I remember that day last year it was tough,” he said. “We got whooped, it’s tough. Obviously, we’re a whole new team, whole new cast of characters, new coach and it’s the playoffs, so we’re just oing in focusing on this.
“Knowing what we need to do and execute and come out victorious next week. We’re playing to win.”
WILL CAMPBELL AND MILTON WILLIAMS RETURN
Patriots left tackle Will Campbell and defensive lineman Milt Williams were back on the field after being gone for over a month with knee and ankle injuries, respectively.
“I feel good, so it’s a blessing,” Campbell said. “I just can’t thank the guys in the training room enough that helped me out. They pushed me. Just trying to get me in the best position possible and I appreciate it.”
Williams said the same thing.
“Shout out to our training staff, our strength staff, and our coaching staff for keeping me in the loop,” he said after, adding that his ankle injury was “not to be as bad as everybody initially thought.”
DIGGS GETS OVER 1,OOO RECEIVING YARDS
It’s been quite a week for Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs, who we learned on Tuesday that he is facing charges stemming from an alleged assault, but on Sunday eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for a contract incentive, coming off a torn ACL suffered last season.
“People don’t know how much work it took to get here,” he said, “so I’m just really thankful for my teammates and my coaches. They were probably happier than I was. I put a lot o work to get to that point and I told you all fingers crossed.”
PATRIOTS OPPONENTS NEXT YEAR
Now that the regular season is over, the Patriots home and away opponents next year are set. Home will be the Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Packers, Raiders, Vikings and Steelers and Broncos.
Road games are the Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Bears, Lions, Chiefs, Chargers, Jaguars and Seahawks.
