UNH Roundup: Vermont sweeps hoop; women’s hockey wins

DURHAM – Junior guard KiJan Robinson scored a game-high 22 points but the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team was defeated 80-61 by the University of Vermont at Lundholm Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Robinson’s season-high 22 points was scored on 6 of 12 shooting from the floor, which included 4-for-7 from 3-point range, and a perfect 6 of 6 from the foul line. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Junior forward Belal El Shakery finished with 11 points, team-high six rebounds, and four assists, which also led the team. Redshirt freshman guard R.J. Kennedy had 10 points.

UVM was led offensively by TJ Hurley (20 points), Gus Yalden (18) and Sean Blake (17).

UNH moves to 4-10 overall and 0-1 in America East while Vermont is 9-7, 1-0. The Wildcats returns to action Thursday at NJIT at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

VERMONT 72, UNH 56

Junior guard Eva DeChent recorded 15 points and nine rebounds but the Wildcats fell at Patrick Gym in Burlington,Vt.

Senior forward Lucia Melero Sabat matched her career high of 12 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the floor. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie of Hampstead finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

DeChent, who led all players by matching her personal best of nine rebounds, also had three assists and two blocks. Nikola Priede led all scorers with 35 points while both Keira Hanson (13) and Jadyn Weltz (10) also scored in double digits for Vermont.

UNH,which next hosts NJIT on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lundholm Gym, is now 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference. UVM is 13-4, 2-0.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 4, LIU 0

The Wildcat women returned to action with a win over Long Island University (6-9-1, 4-8-1 NEWHA) on at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.

New Hampshire opened the scoring 12:58 into the opening frame, when Sydney Leonard took a centering feed from Concord’s Ireland Fredrickson before connecting in the crease, putting the ‘Cats ahead 1-0. Sadie Makokis earned the secondary assist on a pass in the defensive zone.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second period, with the Wildcats outpacing the Sharks on the shot chart 23-to-4.

New Hampshire doubled their advantage 3:05 into the third period, when Nina Rossi skated through the high slot before finding Alyson Hush in the right face-off circle, who fired past Long Island’s Clara Kammholz with one second left on the 5-on-3 to make it 2-0.

The Wildcats struck again on the power-play just 36 seconds later, when Rossi put away a loose assist from Kristen Hartman in the slot, giving UNH the 3-0 advantage.

Midway through the frame, Addison Spitz collected the puck behind the LIU net before finding Kelly Harty in the slot, who fired past Kammholz for the final 4-0 score.

MEN’S HOCKEY

COLGATE 3, UNH 2

Jake Schneider scored the game winner late in third period for the Raiders as the No. 20 Wildcats fell in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex in non-conference action.

Senior captain Morgan Winters and freshman forward Jacob Newcombe each scored for the Wildcats, while senior goalie Kyle Chauvette of Goffstown made 19 saves.

The Wildcats fall to 10-8-0, while the Raiders advance to 7-10-2.

The Wildcats will conclude the two-game home series versus Colgate tonight at the Whitt at 7.
