The New England Patriots smooth ride through the season has hit a potential major speed bump with the playoffs approaching.
Boston 25 News first reported Tuesday morning say that Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs is facing felony charges, the news breaking as the result of a motion hearing today in Dedham, Mass. District Court. Diggs, reports say, is charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges stemming from an incident that allegedly took place on Dec. 2.
That was the day after the Patriots beat the New York Giants in a Monday night game and were about to embark on their bye week break.
The hearing Tuesday, held remotely, was considering a request from Diggs’ attorneys to have the police report details sealed. Diggs, reports say, is scheduled to be arraigned in Dedham District Court on Jan. 23. That is two days prior to the AFC Championship Game. Reportedly there is a possibility it could be moved to a date in March. Also, according to reports, Diggs’ lawyers have said he is in financial discussions with the alleged party making the charges. The attorneys have also said this is the result of an employee-employer dispute. Reportedly Diggs’ accuser is a female who was employed as a chef.
The Patriots have issued the following statement regarding the case:
“The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”
This is the second time Diggs, who is having a stellar season with 82 catches for 970 yards and four TDs, has been in the spotlight off the field. The first was the result of a video that went viral late last May showing Diggs with a bag holding a pink substance on a boat in Florida.
The NFL has also issued a statement that says “We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club. We have no further comment at this time.”
