The Boston Red Sox have engineered a trade with the St.Louis Cardinals to acquire hitter Wilson Contreras, according to muliple reports.

The Red Sox, in addition to receiving $8 million to cover part of Contreras’ remaining $41.5 million salary, are sending to St. Louis RHP Hunter Dobbins, RHP Yhoiker Fajardo and RHP Blake Aita. Contreras’ contract goes through 2027 with a club option for 2028.

Contreras, who turns 34 in May, was primarily a catcher until the Cardinals moved him to first base and DH last season. He hit .257 with 20 homers, 31 doubles, 80 RBIs and a .791 OPS in 135 games. He is at least one answer to a bat the Red Sox have been looking to acquire, especially if they don’t re-sign current free agent Alex Bregman.
