UNH Roundup: Women’s hockey upsets Brown; hoop teams bow
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team skated to a win over Brown University (8-5-1, 4-3-1 HEA) on Sunday afternoon , opping the Bears 4-1 at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown opened the scoring 2:47 into the first period, when forward Jade Iginla collected a blocked India McDadi shot, striking on the rebound opportunity to give the Bears a 1-0 advantage. Brown continued to apply pressure on offense for the remainder of the period, closing the first 20 minutes with a 14-8 edge on the shot chart, paced by three tries from both Iginla and McDadi. For the Wildcats, six different players put the puck on net, led by a pair of tries from freshmen defensemen Alex Therien and Aurora Kahlert.
The Wildcats tied things up early in the second period as Addison Spitz fired a try from the right face-off dot, taking a bounce off Brown’s Anya Zupkofska’s right pad and finding the stick of Kelly Harty in the slot, who fired on net for her team-leading seventh score of the season. New Hampshire paced Brown in the middle frame, outshooting the Bears 12-7, led by five different players with a pair of tries on net.
New Hampshire found their first lead of the night 2:46 into the third period, when Alyson Hush found Danika Botterill in the slot for a one-time try, beating Brown’s Zupkofska glove-side to take a 2-1 advantage. The Wildcats iced the game with late empty net goals from Hush and Spitz, bringing about the final 4-1 tally.
Five different Wildcats logged points in the win, paced by a three-point performance from Spitz and two-point performances from Hush and Botterill. Additionally, 13 different players landed a shot on net, including eight individuals with at least three tries. On defense, nine players blocked a shot, led by Harty with three, while junior netminder Noemi Martinez denied 29-of-30 tries on net, closing out with a .967 save percentage.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday when UNH travels to Boston to take on No. 7 Northeastern (13-3-0, 9-0-0 HEA) for a 6pm puck drop at Matthews Arena.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
FAIRFIELD 72, UNH 68
Junior forward Belal El Shakery recorded 13 points and eight rebounds but the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team was edged by Fairfield University at Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Sunday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn.
In addition to leading UNH in both scoring and rebounding, El Shakery recorded two steals, two blocks and an assist.
Junior guard Davide Poser scored 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. Junior guard Jack Graham, sophomore forward John Squire and Merrimack freshman guard Tyler Bike each scored nine points.
Brandon Benjamin (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Declan Wucherpfennig (12 points, 14 rebounds) both recorded a double-double and Braden Sparks scored a game-high 22 points for the Stags.
UNH is now 2-6 overall and Fairfield is 5-3.
UNH returns to action Dec. 3 (7pm) at Dartmouth College.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
HOLY CROSS 64, UNH 45
Junior guard Eva DeChent scored a team-high 18 points but the Wildcats fell short at Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
DeChent shot 50 percent from the floor (8-for-16) and her other stats included two steals and two blocks.
Junior guard Maggie Cavanaugh recorded season highs of 10 points and six rebounds; she also had four assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Elizabeth Lavoie of Hampstead finished with eight points seven rebounds.
Meg Cahalan led Holy Cross with a game-high 20 points in addition to six rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Janie Bachman (13) and Kaitlyn Flanagan (11) also scored in double digits for the Crusaders.
UNH is now 2-6 and Holy Cross improves to 3-4.
UNH returns to action Friday at 11 a.m. against Merrimack College for Education Day at Lundholm Gym. Admission is free.
