She’s made amateur baseball history as a player, has worked professionally as a minor league and college coach and now former Souhegan High School catcher Beth Greenwood is going pro as a player.

Greenwood was selected by the Boston team in the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL) that is set to have its inaugural season in 2026. Greenwood was tabbed as the 13th pick in the third round.

The league has teams in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. It will play all its games at a neutral site in Springfield, Ill. in 2026 but then move games to the home markets in 2027.It’s the fifth American professional women’s baseball league in history; the last was Ladies League Baseball that lasted just two years (1997-98). The league is slated to play four weeks in the summer for its regular season, then have a two-week postseason.

Greenwood will become the latest player coached by retired New Hampshire coaching legend Bill Dod, longtime Souhegan coach, to play in the professional ranks.

“I think she will be an outstanding addition for her pitching staff,” Dod said.

Greenwood was one of two New Hampshire players selected. The other is Bedford’s Maggie Foxx. Foxx played this past spring for Brown University.

Known as a baseball pioneer, at the University of Rochester Greenwood made history as the first American female to catch in an NCAA baseball game in 2021 and was the first female baseball player in the history of the circuit Rochester competed in, the Liberty League.

Greenwood spent last year as an assistant coach in charge of pitchers at Vassar College, after two years with the Phillies organization as a Minor League Development coach with the Class A Jersey Shore BlueClaws. She was the catching coach and had other duties, including player development, as well.

Greenwood also spent time with several girls baseball organizations, and was a coach for MLB Grit: Girls ID Tour among other groups.

But she really peaked as a player for the USA Women’s National Baseball team program since 2018. She was on the USA Baseball National Development Roster from 2018-2022.
