Rivier Hoop Roundup: Both men, women, fall short on road

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Rivier men’s basketball team dropped a non-conference bout with Salve Regina, 75-70, Thursday evening at the Rodgers Recreation Center.
With the loss, the Raiders fell to 3-3, while the Seahawks improved to 4-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Theo Briscoe IV opened the scoring with a three, giving Rivier the early lead. Both teams traded baskets through the opening minutes, keeping the game within a few points.
Senior Izaiah Shaw-Glen led the way with six points in the paint over the back-and-forth stretch, followed by classmate Robenson Baguidy with five points.Just past the midway point of the first half, both teams held firm at 23-18 in favor of Salve Regina following a scoreless of 3:08.
Shaw-Glen fueled a 12-3 run, adding nine points to his total to take the lead a 33-31 lead into halftime.
The Seahawks tied the game immediately to open the second half, but Baguidy answered with a jumper to regain control. Sophomore Matt Youngquist drilled a key three to give the Raiders a 50-48 lead with 11:52 remaining in the half.
Consecutive plays from Baguidy and first-year Daylen Dalcour grew Rivier’s lead to 60-50 with 8:52 to go.
Salve Regina responded with a late surge, eventually reclaiming the lead in the final minutes. Sophomore Steph Barnes knocked down a free throw with 2:21 on the clock to bring the Raiders withing six.
A late three from Baguidy kept Rivier within one possession, but the Seahawks 10-point advantage with 25 seconds to play closed out the contest.
BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
Shaw-Glen led the offensive charge with 24 points, adding four rebounds and a block…Baguidy contributed 19 points, with team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (7)…Briscoe rounded out the top performers with 11 points on 4-7 from the field, including 50% from distance.
UP NEXT
The Raiders face off against non-conference opponents Hartford Saturday, Nov. 22 for their third consecutive road matchup. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Chase Arena.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
COLBY 86, RIVIER 43
Rivier fell in a non-conference matchup at the Margaret M. Crook Center in Waterville, Me. With the loss, the Raiders moved to 0-5 on the season, while the Mules improved to 3-0.
Colby came out firing, opening the game with an 11-0 run. Rivier junior Mia Fantauzzi put the Raiders on the board with a pair of free throws, and later knocked down a three to help the Raiders settle in, but Colby continued to have success offensively, closing out the first quarter ahead 29-11.
First-year Madi Ricker provided a spark for Rivier in the second quarter knocking down two 3’s but the Mules continued their strong offensive rhythm, extending their lead to 51-21 at halftime.
Rivier posted its strongest offensive frame in the third quarter with 16 points Junior Haley Phillips led the charge with five points in the stanza, including a layup and a free throw. Ricker added seven third-quarter points as the Raiders continued to battle, but Colby countered with efficient scoring to maintain control. The Mules once again pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Rivier 12-6 to seal the contest.
Ricker led the Raiders with a career-best 17 points, shooting 7-of-18 from the field and adding five rebounds.Fantauzzi followed with nine points, while Sydney Perry contributed four points and four rebounds.
Sophomore Hannah Smith added five boards and two points in her first collegiate start. Phillips finished with five points off the bench
The Mules held the slight advantage in rebounds, 27-23.
The Raiders return to action with another non-conference matchup, as they head to Nichols College Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
