CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox acquired left-hander Chris Murphy in a trade with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, one of several moves made by the Red Sox on the day.

Murphy went 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA in 23 relief appearances over three stints with the Red Sox this year. He also made five starts and 13 relief appearances in the minors, going 1-0 with a 2.93 ERA.

The 27-year-old Murphy was selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2019 amateur draft. He missed the 2024 season after he had Tommy John surgery.

Boston acquired minor league catcher Ronny Hernández in the deal. The 21-year-old Hernández hit .251 with four homers and 34 RBIs in 82 games with Class A Kannapolis this year.

The Red Sox also acquired infielder Tristan Gray from the Tampa Bay Rays, in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Luis Guerrero. To make room for Gray on the 40-man roster, Boston designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment.

Gray, 29, played in 30 games for the Rays during 2025, batting .231 (18-for-78) with five doubles, three home runs, and nine RBI while making nine starts at second base, seven at shortstop, three at third base, and one at first base. The left-handed hitter also played in 72 games for Triple-A Charlotte, hitting .270 (67-for-248) with an .805 OPS. Originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 13th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has played in 47 career Major League games with the Rays (2023, 2025), Miami Marlins (2024), and Athletics (2024).

Guerrero, 25, posted a 4.15 ERA (8 ER/17.1 IP) in 13 games for the Red Sox during 2025. The right-hander also recorded a 4.39 ERA (13 ER/26.2 IP) in 21 games with Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox also traded right-hander Alex Hoppe to Seattle and left-hander Brennan Bernardino to Colorado. They got minor league catcher Luke Heyman from the Mariners and outfielder Braiden Ward from the Rockies.

The 33-year-old Bernardino went 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA in 55 appearances with the Red Sox this past season.

The Red Sox also designated right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski for assignment. Winckowski, 27, pitched in six games for the Red Sox in 2025, posting a 3.86 ERA (5 ER/11.2 IP). The right-hander also recorded a 2.21 ERA (5 ER/20.1 IP) with 18 strikeouts in five games (three starts) for Worcester. He was placed on the 60-Day Injured List on June 7 with a right elbow flexor strain and missed the remainder of the season.
