MVP? Patriot fans told Maye he’s their top choice
The chants rained down Thursday night from the Gillette Stadium throng every time Drake Maye made a play that probably drove Jets coach Aaron Glenn nuts on the sidelines.
“MVP! MVP! MVP!” they yelled.
Clearly the New England Patriots had the edge in the quarterback position for the most part last night. Jets QB Justin Fields directed two nice drives, mainly with his feet. But a dropback passer out of the pocket he isnt as he went 15 of 26 for 116 yards. With the Jets best receiver, Garrett Wilson out, Fields was often unable to process a play and would just take off. As Jets coach Aaron Glenn said, “We got to have some guys that make some plays for him too.”
Maye missed here and there, but its clear that if he ever were to win that award, he’d have to give part of that to Stefon Diggs, who caught 9 balls for 105 yards. And Hunter Henry. Plus Pop Douglas….
The list goes on. That group helped Maye when needed, but especially Diggs. The veteran has been better and better each week on the field, and by all accounts, even better off it.
But we all know that 9-2 doesnt happen without the second year QB, and the Patriots would be toast without him. He was 25 of 34 for 281 yards and a TD. He carved up a Jets secondary that for the most part was aimlessly running around.
But again it was Thursday Night.
“Things we looked back on, you know, didn’t have as much time to prepare for some things that I could look back at myself and wish I had plays back, but at the end of the day, just proud of these guys for the effort, the win, and that’s the best thing about Thursday night,” Maye said. “You get a weekend to catch up on some rest and some heal-up.”
Vrabel knows what he has in his QB.
“I would say his performance in general has been what we expect,” he said. “We have high expectations for Drake. He has high expectations for himself. He’ll continue to improve. I know he’ll stay humble through this all. Again, as far as the performance tonight, I thought it was, again, in first view, pretty good. It was good enough to win.”
And that’s all that counts, right? The chants kept coming, even into the fourth quarter.
“Yeah, may have been for TreVeyon tonight,” Maye said. “He scored three touchdowns. No, I think our fans have been great with me since I got here, since I got drafted. I just appreciate them for embracing me, and trying to embrace this city and give these fans and this team and just myself just leave it all out there and give it everything I got.”
He’s got his rookie left tackle Will Campbell’s vote for sure.
“I’m biased, but I think he’s the best player in the NFL,” Campbell said of Maye. “There’s no game we’re out of when we have him. Even how good a player he is, he’s a better person, better teammate, so that just makes it that much more cool to share a huddle with him…”
Biased, yes, but the rest of the NFL has taken notice. At 9-Ö, how could they not?
“That is a well-coached team,” Glenn said, “that has a quarterback that’s playing really well, which we all knew.”
And now,we’re on to Cincinnatti.
