UNH men’s soccer season ends with OT loss at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Senior goalkeeper Scott Williams was outstanding in net with 10 saves and senior captain Matteo Piccardo scored for the Wildcats but the No. 4 seed University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team fell to No. 1 seed and No. 2 nationally-ranked Vermont, 2-1 in overtime, on a snowy Wednesday night at Virtue Field in the Semifinals of the America East Championship.

UVM earned the win in the 98th minute (97:43) when Ismail headed the ball to Maximilian Kissel who scored on a one-timer from five yards out.    

The Catamounts advance to the America East Championship Game and will play No. 2 seed and No. 5 nationally-ranked Bryant on Sunday, Nov. 16 on ESPN+. The Bulldogs defeated No. 6 seed UMass Lowell, 4-2, in the other semifinal.

The Wildcats conclude the season at 5-8-5, while the Catamounts improve to 13-0-5.

The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute (8:22), when Piccardo sent a shot from 14 yards out to the upper right corner of the net.

The Catamounts then tied the contest at 1-1 in the 85th minute when David Ismail found the back of the net, from six yards out.
