Rivier Hoop Roundup: Men top Nichols, women fall at FSU

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Rivier men’s basketball team defeated non-conference opponents Nichols, 82-68, Wednesday evening at the Nichols Athletic Center.

With the win, the Raiders improved to 2-1, while the Bison fell to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Izaiah Shaw-Glen got Rivier on the board first with a quick layup.

Both teams traded scores following the opening bucket, until a three from Nichols gave them a 12-10 lead.

Just past the midway point of the first half, senior Robenson Baguidy scored a pair from the free-throw to tie the game up, 16-16.

The game was tied for just a minute of action until sophomore Steph Barnes knocked down the and one free threw to take a one-point advantage.

Both squads once again traded scores down the stretch, but a 11-10 run gave the Bison a 33-31 lead heading into halftime.

Nichols scored a quick bucket coming out of the break to take a 35-31 lead.

The Raiders countered with an 18-4 run to take a 49-39 lead. Through the stretch, the Raiders shot 90% from the field as junior Jamari Williams led the scoring efforts with eight points, followed by Baguidy with six.

Rivier continued to surge offensively, extending its lead to as much as 20 points. Nichols went on a 16-10 over the final 3:32, but its comeback bid was unsuccessful in the end with the Raiders taking to contest, 82-68.

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN

Shaw-Glan was the leading scorer for the Raiders finishing with 31 points on 60.9% shooting and six rebounds…Baguidy followed with 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and seven steals…Williams was a presence on the glass recording a team-high 10 rebounds, contributing 11 points.

UP NEXT

The Raiders return home Saturday, Nov. 15 for a non-conference matchup with Colby. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Muldoon Center.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

FRAMINGHAM STATE 82, RIVIER 53

The Rivier women’s basketball team fell in a non-conference matchup at the Athletic & Recreation Center in Framingham, Mass. With the loss, the Raiders dropped to 0-2 on the season, while the Rams improved to 2-0.

The Rams opened the scoring quickly with a layup, followed by a jump shot to take an early 4-0 lead.Graduate student Juju Nealy got the Raiders on the board with a layup of her own.

Both teams went scoreless for more than two minutes before Framingham extended its lead, 8-2.Sophomore Sydney Perry hit a par of free-throws to cut the deficit to 12-6 after one.The Rams struck first in the second quarter with a quick 3-pointer. First-year Madi Ricker responded with a jumper in the corner following an excellent bounce pass from Nealy, cutting the deficit to seven. Framingham St. maintained a seven point lead heading into halftime

Perry opened the second-half scoring for Rivier with a layup just 30 seconds into the third quarter. From there, the Rams caught fire from the field, extending their lead to 27 points after starting the half up by just seven

Framingham St. carried its momentum into the fourth quarter however, Ricker continued to battle, adding five points in the final frame.

Sophomore Gianna Donato led Rivier with 18 points. Junior Mia Fantauzzi provided a spark off the bench, adding seven points and three rebounds.

Ricker and Perry controlled the boards for the Raiders, collecting seven and six rebounds, respectively.

The Rams held a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded Rivier, 39-27.
