Rivier Roundup: Wins for men’s, women’s soccer; volleyball splits

NASHUA – The Rivier men’s soccer team shutout Mitchell, 5-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Joanne Merrill Field.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 3-4-6 on the season (3-2-2 GNAC), while the Mariners fell to 1-11-1 (0-6-1 GNAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore Alejandro Quezada opened the scoring for the Raiders from a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
First-year David Pereira added a pair of goals for the Raiders to start the second half, with assists from junior Matthews Ferreira and first-year Vincent Arsenov.
Arsenov earned another assist four minutes later, connecting with sophomore Luigi Ferreira.
The Raiders capped the scoring when junior Andrew Lennox found sophomore Kamar Matthew-Murray connecting off a corner from Quezada, 5-0.
Junior goalkeeper Logan Clough earned his second clean sheet of the season, recording two saves.

Rivier held the advantage on corner kick opportunities, 11-1 and outshot the Mariners, 30-4.

The Raiders travel to play GNAC foe, Norwich University on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Sabine Field.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
RIVIER 2, ALBERTUS MAGNS 1
The Raiders got a GNAC win in New Haven, Conn. at Celentano Field, powered by two goals from sophomore Leah Morrier. With the win, the Raiders Improved to 7-4-2 (6-1-1 GNAC), while the Falcons Dropped to 10-2-2 (5-1-2 GNAC)
The Raiders opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Morrier netted her first goal off a feed from junior Maya Leach.
Morrier struck again in the 53rd minute to extend the lead to 2-0.
In a last-ditch effort at a comeback, the Falcons found twine in the 82nd minute, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Shots finished even at 14 apiece. All saves in the match came in the second half, the Falcons holding the 5-3 advantage. Corner kick opportunities for both teams were knotted at 4-4.
The Raiders return to action on the road to take on conference foe New England Col. at Don Melander Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
FIELD HOCKEY
DEAN 8, RIVIER 1
With the result, Dean improved to 10-6 overall (6-1 GNAC), while Rivier moved to 2-11 (2-6 GNAC).
Dean found success early scoring 3 unanswered in the 16 minutes of action
Senior Reilly Swislosky found the back of the net off a corner by first-year Mary Kelly at 16:41 of the second quarter.
The Bulldogs would go on to score 5 more unanswered goals following the Raiders’ lone goal.Despite Dean’s offensive success throughout the first three quarters, Rivier held them scoreless for the final 15 minutes of play
Senior goalkeeper Lily Gifford finished with three saves for the Raiders
Corners favored the Bulldogs 14-7 and Dean held the advantage in total shots, outshooting Rivier, 19-8
The Raiders head to Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field in New London on Wednesday at 4 p.m.for a GNAC matchup against Colby-Sawyer College.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
RAIDERS SPLIT TRI-MATCH
The Rivier women’s volleyball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match with Saint Joseph’s (Me.) (SJC) and Norwich Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center in Standish, Me.
With the results, the Raiders moved to 10-10 (5-1 GNAC), while Monks improved to 9-9 (5-0 GNAC) and the Cadets falling to 1-14 (0-6 GNAC).
Saint Joseph’s (Me.) 3, Rivier 1
Rivier opened the contest with a 5-2 lead. SJC leveled the match 5-5 and from there on both teams were trade scores
The Raiders found themselves down three at the midway point of the first set, however back-to-back kills from senior Callie Nanos and sophomore Savannah Dunne tied the game at 18-18 and forced the Monks into a timeout
SJC regained its lead following the timeout and never gave it up taking the set 25-21.
Rivier kicked off the second set with a 6-1 lead, with sophomore Lydia Brakefield and Dunne recording kills.The Monks chipped away at the deficit getting within two to force the Raiders into a timeout.Coming out of the timeout, junior Lacey Turner recorded two consecutive kills, giving Rivier a 18-13 lead. The Raiders remained out in front, capitalizing on errors by SJC to tie the match, 1-1
Both programs went back and forth in the third set, totaling 11 tie scores and six lead changes. Rivier maintained control late in the third set, holding onto a 18-15 lead, forcing the Monks into a timeout.
SJC battled back to tie the set 23-23, going on a 6-1 run to gain a 2-1 match advantage.
The Monks began the fourth set holding a no more than a three-point advantage
A service ace from junior Sam Driend knotted the game at 12-12, but SJC countered with a 7-2 re-taking the lead
Rivier battled back to tie the game late twice, but SJC were able to fend of the Raiders and seal the match, 26-24
Nanos led the way offensively with 12 kills and a .344 hitting percentage
Sophomore Lily Seibel recorded game-highs in assists (32) and digs (26)
Rivier 3, Norwich 0
Norwich held a 2-1 lead to begin the opening set. Rivier responded with an 7-0 run that included three service aces from Sam Driend.
The Raiders continued to surge offensively, extending their lead to 13-4
With Rivier ahead 17-9, Callie Nanos, Sam Driend, and Lily Seibel each contributed kills to extend the Raiders’ lead to 14 and putting them out of reach to take a 1-0 match lead.
Rivier carried its momentum into the second set, taking a 10-3 lead as a result of an ace by Lacey Turner. With the Raiders on set point, Norwich strung together a 5-0 run before Rivier took a 2-0 match lead
The Cadets took a 4-1 lead to open the third set. Rivier answered with a 18-3 run capped with a pair of kills from Nanos to put the Raiders ahead 19-7
First-year Emma Zeblisky went on a four-point service run, tallying three aces in the process, sending Rivier to match point.
Seibel logged the final kill to seal the match 25-10
Nanos, Driend, and Seibel each recorded seven kills with Nanos hitting at a .778 clip. Seibel posted yet another game-high assist total with 12
Defensively, senior Kaitlyn Miller totaled five digs.
The Raiders return to the court Monday, Oct. 13 for their make-up game with Framingham St. The match will resume at 6:00 p.m. at the Muldoon Center.
