Bill Belichick says he is committed to the football program at the University of North Carolina, and the school says he has its full support in his position as head coach.

Those declarations were issued late Wednesday amid multiple reports that Belichick and the university have been in buyout/exit strategy discussions after a 2-3 start and several criticisms of the former New England Patriots coach’s handling of the program.

“I’m truly committed to UNC Football and the program we’re building here,” Belichick said in a statement.

And UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham issued this statement:

“Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University,” he said.

Multiple reports, however, said otherwise, saying Belichick had discussed an exit strategy if he could find “a soft landing spot” in coaching or media.

There reports of a disconnect between Belichick and his staff, to the point where some assistants were looking into getting jobs with schools that would likely be in the College Football Playoff.

UNC, which was embarrassed by Clemson last week 38-10, does not play again until Friday, Oct. 17 at California.
