UNH stays in control to beat UAlbany 24-6 in Durham
DURHAM – Sophomore running back Denzell Gibson, sophomore wide receiver Ryan Blagg(Westford, Mass), and sophomore quarterback Matt Vezza each scored a touchdown in the University of New Hampshire football team’s 24-6 victory against UAlbany on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
UNH improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in CAA Football while UAlbany moved to 1-4, 0-1.
Vezza was an efficient 19 of 24 for 190 yards and a six-yard touchdown and also rushed 12 times for 12 yards and a three-yard TD. Grad student wide receiver Chase Wilson was the top receiver with four catches for 74 yards. Senior running back Myles Thomason had a team-high 77 rushing yards on 16 carries.
Grad student safety Duncan Moreland and senior cornerback Zeroun Skinner led the Wildcats with five tackles apiece and Skinner was credited with 1.5 tackles for loss. Freshman corner Kelby Hampton recorded the only takeaway in the game with an interception.
With 28 seconds left in the first half, Vezza connected with Ryan Blagg on a six-yard pass into the end zone and Reed’s PAT extended the UNH lead to14-0 lead heading into halftime.
Pinned at their three-yard line, the Wildcats went 97 yards in 12 plays on their first possession of the third quarter. Vezza powered up the middle on a three-yard run into the end zone and Reed followed with a successful extra point to push New Hampshire’s advantage to 21-0 with 5:24 remaining in the third quarter.
