It had to be a dream come true this weekend for Cam Devanney.
Think about it. Devanney, the former Central Catholic (Lawrence, Mass.) standout from Amherst, had been called up by the Kansas City Royals from Triple A Omaha in July. Not only didn’t he appear in a game, he got traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates who immediately sent him down to Triple A Indianapolis.
Well, patience for Devanney was a virtue as he was called up by Pittsburgh while they were in a three-game series vs. the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. And on Sunday, Devanney made his Major League debut in the ballpark he came to as a fan growing up.
“This is as cool as it gets for me, man,” Devanney told the media over the weekend. “I’ve been watching Red Sox games since I was 5-years-old. Just really cool. I can’t think of a better way to hopefully kick off my (Major League) career.”
Devanney went 0-for-3 with a walk in his debut. In his first at-bat in the third inning he swung at the first pitch from Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito and flied to center. He also struck out twice.
Devanney was called up after the Pirates placed utility infielder Ronny Sion on the 10-day IL with a shoulder injury. Also, the Pirates let go of veteran infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who was claimed by Toronto on waivers on Sunday.
Devanney, 28, played third and batted ninth on Sunday in the Red Sox 5-2 win. He can play second and short as well. In Triple A, he hit .263 with 20 homers between Omaha and Indianapolis.
The Pirates are off today before they host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
