UNH Soccer: BU edges Wildcat men; women tie Stonehill

DURHAM – Alex Bonnington scored the lone goal of the game for the Terriers as the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team fell to Boston University, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

The first half went scoreless as each team took one shot on goal.

Bonnington gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute (47:57) when he knocked in a rebound off a shot from Austin Mobray that hit the post.

The Wildcats almost tied the match in the 74th minute when graduate student back Jiwoo Lee sent a header that was saved by BU goalie Ben Alexander.

The ‘Cats will return to action Sunday, at 5 p.m. against Colgate on ESPN+ at Wildcat Stadium.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UNH 1, STONEHILL 1

Graduate student Shya Walker scored the first goal of the season for the Wildcats at Wildcat Stadium in the home opener.

However, the Skyhawks tied the game in the 71st minute (70:46) when Hannah Anselmo blasted a shot from 18 yards out to the upper left corner of the net.

The ‘Cats are now 0-1-1, while the Skyhawks are 0-2-1.

The first half went scoreless as the Wildcats outshot the Skyhawks 6-4, while UNH had three shots on goal and Stonehill took one.

The ‘Cats took a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute (59:02) when junior midfielder Elizabeth Finn sent a pass to Walker who scored on a one-timer from five yards out for her first goal as a UNH Wildcat. Junior forward Natalie Zibinskas of Kensington also earned her first point as a Wildcat with an assist on the goal.

The ‘Cats return to action on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Holy Cross at 6 PM on ESPN+.
