What a postseason it’s been in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League as it will come down to the last day to determine a champion.
It looked like it would be all known on Friday night, as New Britain took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth vs. the two-time defending champion Norwich Sea Unicorns. But Norwich got two runs to tie it at 4, and then Bryce Detwiler’s RBI single in the bottom of the 12th walked it off for the Unis, 5-4 before 2,197 at Dodd Stadium.
That sets up a winner-take-all contest today at 1:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium in what’s been the FCBL’s Battle of Connecticut for the league crown.
New Britain jumped on Norwich for three in the top of the first on George Slauson’s three-run homer off Norwich starter Matt Wooton. The Bees made it 4-0 on Jake Risedorf’s sac fly in the third.
Norwich got two in the bottom of the frame on Charlie Walsh’s two-run single.
Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth, when Detwiler led it off with a triple off Bees closer Evan Mello, and scored on a wild pitch.
C.J. Nolan then singled and eventually scored on Gavin O’Brien’s one-out single to tie things at 4.
Then, in the 12th, Chace Chaplin doubled after two were out off Bees reliever Lucas Kamoen, and pinch-runner Michael Fiatrone scored on Detwiler’s single to center to force a deciding Game 3 today.
