Amazing.
The Worcester Bravehearts and Vermont Lake Monsters dominated the Futures Collegiate Baseball League all summer — until when it counted the most.
Instead, it will be Connecticut’s two sub-.500 teams, the New Britain Bees and two-time defending champion Norwich Sea Unicorns who will be in the FCBL finals beginning tonight at New Britain Stadium.
Norwich, the fourth seed at 28-33, swept 45-win Worcester in two straight and Tuesday night third seed New Britain kept up its end of the bargain, stunning the No. 2 Vermont Lake Monsters 6-2 at Burlington’s Centennial Field.
It wasn’t even close. The Bees, who finished 29-32 in the regular season, pounded out 12 hits, four of them in the first inning as they grabbed a 2-0 lead. They scored four more in the third, the big blow a two-run single by Camden Righi. Three of the four runs in the frame were unearned.
Righi, Colin Crowley and David Pengel each had two hits for the Bees. Vermont got two runs in the fifth on RBI hits by Sam Cavossa and Leandro Guevara. But that was it.
Reliever Devin DiVita got the win for the Bees, allowing two runs on five hits over 3.1 innings. Starter Ty Davis pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless ball, while Lake Monster starter Adam Schwartz took the loss.
After tonight’s Game 1, the teams will take Thursday off and resume the best-of-3 series on Friday night at Norwich’s Dodd Stadium. If a third game is necessary, it will be Saturday in New Britain, time tba.
