Here’s your August as we start inching toward end of summer

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Aug 3, 2025

Time flies in the summer waaaaay too quick, so here we are, beginning the month of August.

By the end of this month, the high school seasons will be in full swing.

So here’s a look at the key sports dates, local, regional, and national, that you can mark down as the month flies by:

SUNDAY, AUGUST. 3

The Silver Knights final Sunday home game of the season as they begin the final week of the regular season, hoping against hope that they will be able to make the playoffs. The Worcester Bravehearts are in town for this one, but don’t fear, if you miss former SNHU and Pinkerton standout Jackson Marshall, you can see him again three days later as the Bravehearts are back on that following Wednesday.

MONDAY, AUGUST 4

The Kansas City Royals are in town to take on the Red Sox. Now we had this date circled for a reason that now doesn’t exist, as former Royal Cam Devanney of Amherst was, if he was still on the roster, to be with the visitors. But alas, he was traded and is now in the Pirates system.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 8

Patriot fans know why this is a biggie: It’s New England’s preseason opener at Gillette Stadium vs. the Washington Commanders, our first look at Mike Vrabel’s Patriots operation. It will be interesting to see who plays, who starts, etc., and of course there will be way too much put on it. But football has officially returned.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 9

The Silver Knights will have their final regular season game – and perhaps final game of the 2025 season, period – at Holman vs. the dreaded Vermont Lake Monsters, who now own them. Will Nashua have a chance to make the playoffs that begin the next day? Three weeks ago we would have said definitely. Now, as of this writing earlier this week, who knows?

FRIDAY, AUGUST 15

Ring the bell, sound the horn, high school sports officially return with the start of high school football practices in the area and all over the state. Where didn the time go? Simply amazing.

Also this might be the final night of the FCBL postseason, barring any rain, if the playoffs go full three game series in each round. Worcester or Vermont? They look the teams that would be thee in the finals.

MONDAY, AUGUST 18

Football was first, now all the other high school sports follow as most begin their practices, either this day or a day or two later. We’re talking boys and girls soccer, field hockey, girls volleyball, and boys and girls cross country. It’s a short practice season because the season opens quickly.

THURDAY, AUGUST 21

It’s the final preseason game for the Patriots, at the New York Giants at 8 p.m. How long will the starters play in this one? Then it’s a long nine days to cutdown day, but there will probably be a sloth of moves during that time as you don’t go from 90 to 53 in a day.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 23

College Football begins with a handful of games, our favorite is Stanford at Hawaii. C’mon, you’re intrigued – because you’d love to be there.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 28

And so it begins: the high school boys and girls soccer season. Some teams open on Friday, but many open Thursday. The highlight is a Nashua North and South girls soccer doubleheader at Stellos Stadium, with South hosting Bedford at 4 p.m. and North hosing Hanover at 6. Check your favorite school’s schedule or the NHIAA website as well.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY, AUGUST 29-30

Friday is the start of the high school field hockey season, with Bishop Guertin hosting Timberlane at Stellos at noon. Another game of note: defending Division II champion Hollis Brookline is at Derryfield. In soccer, the defending Division II Milford boys open at home vs. Pelham on Friday.

Rivier begins its fall game schedule for most sports. Friday, the women’s soccer team is at Southern Maine on Friday, while the women’s volleyball team as well as field hockey are at Keene State. The Rivier men’s soccer team, which had a great resurgence last fall, open its season on the road at Southern Maine on Saturday.

Still on Saturday, the University of New Hampshire football season begins as the Wildcats open at North Carolina Central – yes a Division I FCS program located in Durham, N.C. – at 6 p.m.

Also on Saturday, players all around the NFL will be holding their collective breath: It’s cutdown day, as teams have to be down to 53 players by 4 p.m. A stressful and busy day as the league gets ready to start its season in a week. Who will survive with the Patriots, and who won’t? Stay tuned.

And then, Labor Day arrives. Summer’s over.
