He may be making millions, but that doesn’t mean Kristian Campbell can stay in the Major Leagues.
The Boston Red Sox, according to multiple reports, have sent Campbell down to Triple A Worcester, opening a spot for the return of right fielder Wilyer Abreu from the 10-day injured list.
Campbell agreed to an eight-year, $60 million deal about a week into the season. But he’d apparently lost his second base job to David Hamilton and has struggled mightily at the plate.
What a difference a couple of months makes: Campbell was the American League’s Rookie of the Month for March/April. Campbell started out hitting .313 with eight doubles, four homers and 12 RBIs in his first 28 games. But the fourth round draft choice of 2023 out of Georgia Tech has hit .154 since. According to MLB.com, Campbell’s minus-14 defensive runs saved at second base ranks last for any player at any position in the Majors this season. He’s also played nine games in the outfield.
Since the start of May, Campbell has hit .159 with four extra base hits, 40 strikeouts and a .465 OPS. He’s committed seven errors at second.
