Here’s your monthly planner for May about a week in
May days have arrived – and it signals the turn of the sports season into the home stretch of spring at the high school level, and the beginning summer as the Silver Knights will arrive.
So, despite the fact that it’s a few days in, let’s try to map out the rest of the month for you, as we normally do at the beginning of each month. Believe it, today may be the biggest of all the key dates:
TODAY, MAY 7
Does it get any bigger? Rivier lacrosse is set to host its first ever NCAA tourney game, and the first at the school, period, when the Raiders host Maine Maritime at 4 p.m.
At the same time, there’s more Battle of the Bridge with the annual North-South boys-girls lax doubleheader at Stellos Stadium. The boys game is at 4 with the girls to meet up at 6. Always a good take; the boys game has been pretty even while South has owned the girls but the Titans are much improved.
Just to complicate things, the North-South tennis teams will also be doing Bridge battle, North hosting the boys at 4 p.m. while South hosts the girls at 4 p.m. as well, as long as the courts dry out.
And then….it’s Game 2 of Knicks-Celtics at TD Garden at 7 p.m. Yikes.
SATURDAY, MAY 10
Boston Celtics-New York Knicks playoff basketball, Game 3 at Madison Square Garden at 3:30 p.m. Depending on tonight’s outcome, this may be must see TV but it’s suddenly supposed to be a decent afternoon weatherwise. Watch it outside?.
And, we don’t want to jinx them, but if Rivier wins today, it heads up to Bowdoin for an NCAA second round game. If they win.
SUNDAY-TUESDAY, MAY 11-13
Did you like the Patriots draft? Well, these will be the days for the mandatory rookie mini camp, as all those picks plus invites and rookie free agents will be there at the Gillette Stadium complex.
MONDAY,MAY 12
Ready for more North vs.South? This time it will be a softball Battle of the Bridge, and it will be at Rivier’s Raider Diamond. South again has the edge but last year both teams struck early before the Panthers pulled away. Always a great spot to showcase the game under the lights, a treat for the players and fans.
THURSDAY-SUNDAY, MAY 15-18
It’s the second golf major of the season, the PGA Championship, to be played at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. We still liked this better as an August tourney.
FRIDAY MAY 16
Holman Stadium is the place to be. Early in the day, beginning at 9:30, will be the annual Futures Collegiate League Open Tryout at Holman. The Silver Knights have picked up a player or two here, so it should be interesting.
Then, later in the day, it’s the annual North-South baseball game, still part of the fight for that Bridge. The JV teams play at 4, then the varsity to follow at 7 p.m. The thing is, before the start of the game, the 2025 Nashua Athletics Hall of Fame Class will be honored out by the pitchers mound.
SATURDAY, MAY 17
More horse racing, as the second leg of the Triple Crown, will be held. Unfortunately, there won’t be a Triple Crown winner as Sovereignty
SUNDAY, MAY 18
One of the biggest days this month: The Nashua Athletics Hall of Fame Induction ceremony at the Courtyard Marriott in Nashua, generally from noon to about 4 p.m. The highlights are the inductions of former Nashua football coach Bill Hardy, former boys hoop coach George Noucas, and late athletic director Al Harrington. A big day.
MONDAY, MAY 19
A team that is on the rise, the New York Mets are in Boston to take on the Red Sox for a three-game series through Wednesday. What’s the attraction? Why, the richest player in baseball, Juan Soto, of course.
TUESDAY, MAY 27
It’s the start of the NHIAA tourney season, the boys tennis team tourney. Keep an eye on Hollis Brookline in Division II, they look like contenders, and Nashua South could make some noise in Division I.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 28
And so it begins. Ahh, another one of those big days. It’s the Nashua Silver Knights season opener, their first Education Day Game, at 10:30 a.m.at Holman Stadium vs. the Worcester Bravehearts. It’s the managerial debut of new Knights skipper – and former Nashua pitching standout – Nick Guarino.
Later in the day is the first round of the NHIAA girls team tennis tourney. Souhegan is on a mission for that elusive Division II title.
FRIDAY, MAY 30
It will be the first Friday Night Fireworks night for the Silver Knights, as they take on the Vermont Lake Monsters at 6:05 p.m.
But, perhaps even bigger, if you’re a high school track and field fan head to Portsmouth to see the NHIAA Division I boys and girls Outdoor Track Championships.
SATURDAY, MAY 31
The month ends with the Division II track championships at Sanborn, a day event, the Red Sox at Atlanta and the Silver Knights at Norwich.
There you go, fans. Remember, there are no slow months in the world of sports, local or otherwise.
