The Red Sox are likely hoping that Walker Buehler’s World Series performance means he’s just about all the way back.

In fact, they’re betting a reported $21.05 million on it.

The Sox have reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Buehler, who closed out the deciding Game 5 of the Dodgers’ World Series triumph over the Yankees.

Buehler was recovering from his second Tommy John surgery that he underwent in August of 2021, and struggled most of 2024, with a 5.38 ERA in 75.1 innings of work, including 16 starts.

But in the postseason he had a 3.60 ERA and struck out 13 batters in 15 innings. He had four postseason appearances, and in the World series pitched five scoreless innings in Game 3.

Buehler, 30, is a two-time All-Star and was considered one of the game’s best starters from 2018-21. He’s the third potential starter the Red Sox have added in the last week, as they also traded for former White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet and signed lefty Patrick Sandoval to a two-year, $18.25 deal. Sandoval won’t be available until likely August as he is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Buehler’s best year was in 2021 when he went 16-4 with a 2.47 ERA striking out 212 in 207.2 innings of work.

Sandoval, 28, made 16 starts for the Los Angeles Angels this year, going 2-8 with a 5.08 ERA before tearing his UCL on June 21 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on a pitch to former teammate Shohei Ohtani.

Sandoval had internal brace surgery five days later. The operation has an anticipated recovery time of at least a year.

Sandoval is 19-45 with 4.01 ERA in 100 starts and seven relief appearances over six major league seasons, all with the Angels.

Sandoval played for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and was selected to the All-WBC team after going 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two starts.
