UNH women’s soccer falls to Maine in AE title game, 3-0
ORONO, Me. – The No. 2 seed University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team was defeated by No. 1 seed Maine, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in the America East Championship final.
Redshirt junior captain Sally Rainey of West Lebanon, the America East Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded two saves in the loss, while Maine’s Grace Wilson made five stops.
Senior Megan Logue, junior Abbi Maier, and sophomore Elizabeth Finn were named to the All-Championship Team.
The Wildcats, runner-up in both the America East regular season and tournament, conclude the season 12-5-1. The ‘Cats, who had a quarterfinal round bye, defeated Binghamton, 3-1, to advance to the title game. The 12 wins by UNH tie the program record set in 1988.
Maines wins back-to-back America East Championship titles and earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Black Bears got on the board early, with Jordane Pinette scoring in the third minute. Maine doubled its lead in the 11th minute with a goal from Abby Kraemer. The Black Bears added a third goal in the 68th minute, with Lara Kirby finding the net.
UNH led in shots (12-9), and both teams tallied five shots on goal.
Maine took eight corner kicks, while UNH had three.
