Popular Red Sox pitching legend Luis Tiant dead at 83

BOSTON — Longtime popular former Boston Red Sox pitching legend Luis Tiant has died at the age of 83.

“El Tiante” as he was called by his fans, spent 19 years pitching in the Major Leagues, and eight of those were with the Red Sox (1971-78) after the Cuban native began his MLB career with six seasons in Cleveland.

Tiant was a three-time All-Star, and two-time AL ERA leader. He is in the Red Sox Hall of Fame, and had a career won-loss record of 229-172 and recorded 2,416 strikeouts.
