It’s just not the same Patriots vs. Jets without Belichick
We will miss Bill Belichick tonight.
There. We said it.
C’mon, be honest, you will too.
Why? Because it’s just not a Patriots-Jets rivalry without the New England head coach absolutely despising the other sideline in at MetLife Stadium.
It was sad to see that Belichick’s final game as Patriots coach ended the Patriots’ 15 game winning streak against Gang Green. It just didn’t seem right.
So they’ll be a new twist to the Patriots-Jets rivalry, but we’re just not sure what it will be. They’re making a big deal of the fact that in New York this is Aaron Rodgers’ first taste of the rivalry, as well as his return to MetLife since his unfortunate injury just a few snaps in last year.
Rodgers certainly looks like the difference in this one, but he’s not going up against Belichick. Jerod Mayo and DeMarcus Covington will do their best to try to disguise things, and the Jets passing game isn’t exactly high-powered as Rodgers threw for just 179 yards last week.
But oh, you know Belichick would pull out all the stops to win this one after losing a year ago. It just won’t be the same.
Meanwhile, we just can’t settle for mediocrity, as we’re 4-3 for a second straight week:
JETS 20, PATRIOTS 17
If you saw the Jets play defense against the 49ers two weeks ago, you can see how the Patriots should be able to run against them, as New York allowed 130 rushing yards last week vs. the Titans. If they do that, they should be able to keep things close. The Jets also have missed 28 tackles in two games, third worst in the league. But let’s face it, it’s Aaron Rodgers vs. Jacoby Brissett.
BILLS 27, JAGS 20
Oh the heat will be turned up on the Jaguar coaching staff and Doug Pederson if they start 0-3, and they likely will. It all depends on how desperate Jacksonville plays, but Josh Allen has a knack for winning these national TV games at home.
STEELERS 17, CHARGERS 14
Not a lot of offense in this so-called battle of 2-0 teams, and that’s partly due to the Steelers defense, which has allowed eight points in two games. Justin Fields is a game manager right now. Gee, does this all sound familiar?
NINERS 33, RAMS 28
Oh, hell hath no fury like a 49er team scorned, right? They took Minnesota lightly, but that’s not going to happen with the rival Rams, who will be fighting hard to avoid 0-3 – just not hard enough.
EAGLES 27, SAINTS 13
Philly wants desperately to atone for last Monday Night’s fiasco, while the Who Dats and Derek Carr will be full of themselves after their blowout of Dallas, on the road no less. Philly’s defense turns into offense.
COWBOYS 24, RAVENS 21
It’s hard to imagine John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson letting things get to 0-3, right? Well, it was hard to imagine the Saints coming into Jerry’s World and owning it. Just as hard as it is to imagine the Cowboys with all their talent losing two straight at home. Sorry, Lamar.
TEXANS 27, VIKINGS 14
Back to earth, Minnesota. We think Kevin O’Connell is a good coach, but Sam Darnold is his QB and C.J. Stroud is Houston’s. A Texas two-step in the Land of the Lakes.
LAST WEEK: 4-3
SEASON: 8-6
