Mayo says Brissett will start Sunday, but all four QBs to play

While fans are clamoring for more of the Drake, the New England Patriots are sticking to the plan.

Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett will start Sunday night’s preseason finale at the Washington Commanders, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said.

But fear not, you will see more of rookie Drake Maye. In fact, all four QBs will once again see time, which was the case for the first two preseason games. Brissett started both of those, too, but Maye saw much more time in the second week than he did vs. Carolina in the opener.

“Jacoby is going to start the game off,” Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said on Friday. “Drake will play as well. Joe [Milton II] will play as well. Now, you guys can sleep. Bailey [Zappe] will play.

“We do have some players dealing with small things that probably won’t play and get ready for the regular season – some of our proven players.”

That would probably include tight end Hunter Henry, who was hurt nearly two weeks ago and hasn’t returned.

As the training camp wraps up, Mayo says he’s seen the progress in Maye that shows he can be mentally tough.

“If you guys remember early on, he [Maye] would throw interceptions and he would get so down on himself,” Mayo said. “I would say now, as we exit camp, he’s done a lot better job being able to pull the nose up on the plane when it seems like it’s going down. I think that’s an important quality.”

LAST DAY FOR MEDIA

Friday was the last day that the media could watch the full practice, Mayo confirmed. What usually happens from now on as the team gets into regular season mode, the media can see a portion of the beginning of practice which includes stretching, etc., but nothing major, before having to leave the area.
