We have a single repeat champion in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League for the first time since the Nashua Silver Knights won back-to-back in 2016-17.
Introducing the Norwich Sea Unicorns, who won their second straight FCBL crown in dramatic walk-off fashion on Sunday afternoon at Dodd Stadium thanks to Nick Tomasetto’s RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. That gave them a 5-4 win over No. 2 Westfield and a 2-0 sweep of the best-of-three series. Norwich won 5-3 Saturday night in Westfield, Mass.
The Sea Unicorns were down 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth but tied it on Bo Yaworksi’s RBI double. Norwich had a 3-1 lead before the Starfires, who were in the finals for the first time, scored three in the top of the sixth, the key blows a run-scoring double by Cameron Papetti and RBI single by Gianno Merlonghi for the one-run lead.
Mike Poncini picked up the decisive win for Nowwich with two innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits while striking out four. Jordan Talbot took the loss for the Starfires, but Tomasetto’s title-winning hit came off Westfield reliever Camden Thomas of Keene State.
The inning began with two quick outs, but Talbot ended up plunking Andrew James Soldra, and he scored all the way from first on the game-winning double.
Norwich beat Vermont in last year’s finals, and ironically were down 1-0 in games and facing elimination on the road in Burlington before a big win to even the series. After a rainout on Wednesday, the Sea Unicorns bested the Lake Monsters in a morning game Thursday while Westfield awaited the winner after a two-game sweep of No. 3 New Britain.
Worcester technically won back-to-back titles in 2018-19 but in 2018 had to share the crown with then league member Martha’s Vineyard when the finals were cut short due to weather, etc.
