FCBL Playoffs: Westfield, Vermont one win away from Finals
Could it be a Westfield vs. Vermont final in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League?
If those two teams take care of business tonight, that will be the case.
The No. 2 Starfires took care of No. 3 New Britain, 8-5, in Game 1 of their best-of three semifinal in Westfield, Mass. on Monday night. Meanwhile, the fourth seeded Lake Monsters edged defending champion No. 1 Norwich 5-4 at the Sea Unicorns’ Dodd Stadium.
Vermont can clinch with a win tonight at home at Centennial Field. Westfield will have to try to clinch on the road at New Britain Stadium.
Here’s a look:
WESTFIELD 8 NEW BRITAIN 5
A slamming walkoff. Both teams were top offenses during the regular season, but four Westfield pitchers checked the Bees on just three hits while the Starfires pounded out 13 hits. The Bees took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth but Jayden Novak hit a grand slam for the Starfires with nobody out off New Britain reliever Trey Deitelbaum for the dramatic walkoff win.
Novak, set to be a freshman at College of Charleston, was 2 for 5 with a whopping six RBIs on the night. Ryan Scialabba had two hits and scored a run to pace the Bees. Keene State’s Camden Thomas got the win with a ninth inning of scoreless relief.
VERMONT 5, NORWICH 4
The Lake Monsters, keyed by a Zander Teator two-run double, struck for four runs in the first and got what proved to be the game-winner in the fifth on a Mark Quatrani RBI single.
They held on in the ninth as Norwich got a run on Andrew James Soldra’s sac fly and left the tying run at third. Zander Teator got the shakey save while Robbie Lee picked up the win.
