Passaconaway’s Duarte captures Nashua City Golf crown
NASHUA — Your Nashua City Golf Champion is Passaconaway Country Club’s John Duarte.
Duarte, who was three shots off the lead going into the final round at Sky Meadow Country Club on Sunday, fired a 73 for a two day total of 144 and the $750 first prize.
Duarte birdied the first two holes on Sunday, and didn’t bogey a hole until a 6 on the par 5 13th at Sky Meadow. He had another bogey on the par 3 17th but parred 18 to finish with a 39 on the back nine and a 73 for the day.
That was good for two shots ahead of Nashua Country Club’s Phil Pleat, who after a 72 at NCC on Saturday shot a 74 on Sunday at Sky Meadow. That 146 finish was good for $625.
Another key to Duarte’s win was the fact first round leader Jon Dyer had a tough second round. After firing a 68 at NCC on Saturday, the shift to Sky Meadow did not suit him well and he came in with a 79. He had five bogeys and a double bogey and just one birdie on the day.
Dyer was in a three-way tie for third at 147 with fellow NCC members Nate Crowley and Will Miele.
Last year’s champion, Kevin Gaynor of Souhegan Woods, was sixth at 148. He shot a 71 at NCC on Saturday, but Sunday’s 77 took him out of contention. Michael Amari of Northern Spy, Harry Garland of Sky Meadow and Noah LeClair tied for seventh at 150. Chris Miele and Russell Hamel (NCC) tied for10th.
SENIOR DIVISION
Eric McCoy of Nashua Country Club captured the Senior Division with a 142, a 70 on Day 1 followed by a 72 on Sunday. That was seven shots ahead of Souhegan Woods’ Eric Emeneau at 149. Passaconaway’s Scott Doughty and Curt Graham of Souhegan Woods tied for third while Stephen Lane and Larry Nuttall, both of Souhegan Woods, tied for fifth at 156.
