Rivier Roundup: Milestone for Eck; baseball splits at Holman

NASHUA — Connor Eck recorded the 100th goal of his career in the Raiders 17-8 win over Regis (Mass.) on Tuesday night at Merrill Field.

The Raiders are now 5-5 (3-2 GNAC), with the Pride falling to 5-3 (1-3 GNAC).

Rivier would go ahead early, taking an 8-2 lead after the first quarter. Chris Heitmiller, Coby Mercier, and Michael Zapatka, all collected two goals in the opening frame. Sean Callinan and Joseph O’Reilly added on with a goal apiece.

Eck started off the second quarter for the Raiders by rocketing in a shot just 1:27 into the period. Sawyer Hall followed this up a minute later with a goal of his own to make it 10-2. Mercier, Zapatka, and Nicholas Tavares all contributed with another tally before Eck collected his 100th career goal in the second quarter at 4:53 thanks to a feed from Zapatka.

Michael Ference scored the two final goals of the game for Riv in the middle of the third, which would be more than enough to hang on for the win.

Samuel Tibbetts got the start for the Raiders in net, making eight saves. Curtis Michaud and Ryan Palmer each saw time in between the pipes.

The Raiders will continue their homestand on Saturday, April 6 when they take on Mitchell in a GNAC matchup set to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Merrill Field.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

RIVIER 20, LASELL 11

Rivier claimed its second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season at Grellier Field.

The Raiders moved to 5-4 overall (2-3 GNAC), with Lasell falling to 4-5 on the season and winless through four conference matchups.

Riv quickly jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Of four different Raider goal scorers in the first, Sofia Cebrero totaled three while Caitlin Newell scored two. Sarah Lachance and Ashley Wilder added on a goal apiece for Rivier.

Both squads recorded five goals in the second quarter, but the Lasers still trailed the Raiders 12-6 at the half. Rachel Hinkley recorded her first goal of the game on a free position shot at 8:12. Cebrero and Lachance each added on goals, increasing the Raiders lead to 10-4 before two goals from Chiara Skeels would finish up the half for the Raiders.

The Raiders were scoreless in the third quarter, while Lasell’s Kaitlin Bedell notched two unassisted goals to cut the Lasers’ deficit to two.

Rivier pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Lasell 8-3 in the frame. Bailey Carroll earned her first goal of the game on a man-up advantage just over one minute into the quarter. Lachance and Hinkley each grabbed two goals apiece. Cebrero, Newell, and Skeels all tallied a goal each.

Lindsey Kruger made 11 saves in net for Rivier. Cebrero recorded five goals on the day and two ground balls and Lachance with four goals, two assists, eight draw control victories, and two ground balls. Cassie Hemmerdinger contributed with five draw controls and three ground balls, while causing one turnover.

Up next, the Raiders are headed home to Merrill Field on Saturday to take on Emmanuel (Mass.) in a GNAC contest set for 12 p.m.

BASEBALL

RAIDERS SPLIT AT HOLMAN

Rivier baseball opened its home slate with a pair of nine-inning games against Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Norwich on Tuesday afternoon at Holman Stadium, dropping the first game, 9-5, before taking the second game, 11-3.

The Raiders moved to 4-13 (1-3 GNAC) while the Cadets now sit at 3-15 (2-4 GNAC).

Next up, Rivier will head to Springfield for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at Archie Allen Field.

In the opener, Norwich led 5-3 after two innings. In the bottom of the frame, Luis Tejada knocked in a run on a single to right center before JD Normand smacked a two-run homer to left.

The visiting Cadets put together a four-run top of the seventh thanks to a wild pitch, a pair of RBI base knocks, and a hit by pitch to improve their lead to five.

Rivier would score one run in the bottom of the ninth on a Dylan Aliberti RBI single, but would ultimately fall in its home opener.

Tejada finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in while Frank Gulezian went 2-for-4 at the dish. Colton Colleran went 3-for-5.

Rivier 11, Norwich 3

Heading into the bottom of the third, Rivier trailed 3-0 before a Luis Colon double scored Kyle Hsu which would start a string of 11 unanswered runs for the Raiders.

Rivier blew it open with a six-run sixth inning, highlighted by two, two-RBI singles from Colon and Dylan Aliberti.

In the bottom of the eighth, JD Normand put an exclamation point on the victory with a two-run homer to left making it 11-3.

Nate Bonacorsi tossed seven innings, allowing four hits, and one earned run while striking out two batters. Both Patrick Young and Ty Baker pitched the final two innings, shutting down the Cadets’ offense for no runs.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

RIVIER 3, ELMS 1

The Raiders enjoyed Senior Night with a 25-21,27-29, 25-11, 25-22 win at the Muldoon Center to improve to 15-12 overall, 8-2 GNAC.

Chris Lezon led the way with 12 kills while Ly Sokunbuth added 10. Neil Rea had 43 assists and 10 digs to go with four kills, while Peter White had 10 digs as well. Ryan Peace and Isaac Borges each had eight kills for the Raiders, who are at Emerson on Thursday.
