Rivier Roundup: Baseball bows, softball splits, women’s lax wins

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Rivier baseball team fell to Bridgewater St. by a final score of 13-7 on Tuesday at Griffith Field as part of The Ripken Experience.

The Raiders fell to 2-2 with the setback as the Bears improved to 2-3.

Rivier took a 3-1 lead as Milford’s Ben O’Connell hit a three-run shot to left field.

The Bears would rally, scoring nine runs over the next three innings to take a 10-3 lead after four innings of play.

Rivier would add three runs over the sixth and seventh but could not mount a comeback.

First year Damon Reyes took the loss in his collegiate debut, allowing four earned runs on two hits and four walks over 3.0 innings. Reliever Dean Adams, a Nashua South alum, pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one batter.

The Raiders have an off day today before returning to action on Thursday, March 7 against Lancaster Bible. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. from Ebbets Field.

SOFTBALL

RAIDERS SPLIT

The Rivier softball team fell to St. Vincent 5-3 today at The Spring Games, but bounced back to grab the win over Elizabethtown, 3-2.

The Raiders are now 3-1 on the season.

Rivier will head back to Leesburg, Fla. on March 7 to take on Heidelberg and Bluffton at Sleepy Hollow Complex.

In the St. Vincent’s game, St. Vincent scored early in the first generated by a triple to center field.

The Bearcats put up two more runs in the third and one in the fourth, to lead the Raiders 5-0.

Riv cracked open the score in the fifth from Kyleigh Burtsell’s ground out to short, scoring Christina Panagiotopoulos.

A sacrifice fly to right hit by Hayley Rapaglia gave Olivia Couto the opportunity to score the Raiders’ second run of the contest.

Avry Nelson singled to center, sending Panagiotopoulos home.

Panagiotopoulos collected two triples in the outing. Nelson also recorded a triple on the day.

Rivier and St. Vincent totaled eight hits apiece.

First year Hayleigh Silva got her first collegiate start on the mound, seeing two innings for the Raiders. Rapaglia received her first couple of innings of the year, striking out one batter. Courtney Marioles came in to close the game, pitching to four batters.

In the Raiders’s win, the Blue Jays would score first earning two RBIs from a single up the middle.

Following this, Panagiotopoulos singled through the middle, pushing Sophia Quinlin home in the third inning.

The Raiders were down by one heading into the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Amanda Atkison crossed the plate to tie the game at 2-2 on a wild pitch.

Couto walked-off to right center earning a triple and sending Silva home to score the winning run.

Elizabethtown totaled nine hits on the day, while Riv recorded five.

Hailey Berube started for the Raiders and earned five strikeouts. Marioles was tagged with the win seeing three innings.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

RIVIER 10, MASS. MARITIME 8

Trailing at halftime, the Raiders outscored Mass Maritime 6-2 in the second half to triumph in their season opener at Buzzards Bay, Mass.

Sarah Lachance, one of the top players from last season, picked up where she left off with six goals and two assists. Ashley Wilder had a pair of goals while Caitlin Newell and Sofie Cebrero each had a goal and an assist.

With the score tied 8-8, Cebrero with 9:05 left and Lachance with 4:25 left provided the difference.

Rachel Hinkley had 12 saves in goal for the Raiders, who have their home opener on Sunday vs. St. Joe’s (Conn.) at Merrill Field.
