UNH Hockey Roundup: Wildcat men fall to B.C.; women win

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 17 University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team fell No. 1 Boston College, 6-1, on Friday night at Conte Forum in Hockey East action.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 14-10-1 (7-7-1 Hockey East), while the Eagles improve to 20-5-1 (13-3-1 Hockey East).

BC went out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with a goal by Cutter Gauthier (1:07) and power play goals by Jack Malone (2:36) and Ryan Leonard (4:35).

The Eagles made it a 4-0 contest at 11:47 of the second period when Will Smith found the back of the net on the power play.

At 4:55 of the third period, junior forward Robert Cronin (Plymouth, Mass.) sent the faceoff to senior assistant captain Harrison Blaisdell (Regina, Saskatchewan) who blasted a one-timer to the back of the net to make the score 4-1. The goal was Blaisdell’s sixth of the season. Blaisdell and Cronin extended their points streaks to five games.

But Malone then scored his second goal of the game at 5:46 and Gauthier netted his second at 16:40 on the man-advantage for the 6-1 final.

The Wildcats return to action tonight when they play at Merrimack at 7 on ESPN+.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 3, MERRIMACK 2

Senior forward Nicole Kelly scored two goals to lead UNH to a win at Lawler Rink in North Andover, Mass.

Kelly scored the first goal of the game and what proved to be the game-winning goal when she gave the Wildcats a 3-1 second-period lead. Tamara Thiérus scored UNH’s other goal.

UNH goaltender Sedona Blair recorded 23 saves, including 10 io the third period. MC goalie Calli Hogarth was credited with 25 saves. Maria Lindberg and Teghan Inglis scored the Warriors’ goals.

UNH improved to 13-14-2 overall and 10-10-2 in Hockey East to climb into fourth place in the league standings. Merrimack is now 9-17-3, 6-13-3.

New Hampshire and Merrimack conclude the home-and-home series today at UNH’s Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.
