UNH Roundup: Women’s, men’s hoop top UMass Lowell

DURHAM — The University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team led for the entire game for a win against the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Saturday at Lundholm Gym on Spread Respect and Alumni Day.

Diana Eliasson (Stockholm, Sweden) set a new career high for herself in points, scoring 12 in the game. Her previous career high was eight against UMBC in January 2024. Clara Gomez (Barcelona, Spain) also scored a career high in steals with six. Her previous career high was five against Northeastern in November 2023.

The ‘Cats led the entire first half, with the largest lead being 17. UNH’ largest lead of the game was 23 points in the third quarter and held it for just over two minutes.

UNH bested UMass Lowell on rebounds 33-21.The Wildcats dominated in points scored in the paint 36-20 over the River Hawks, and UNH also led in steals 14-10.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UNH 89, UMASS LOWELL 73

Grad student forward Jaxson Baker (Phoenix, Ariz.) and senior forward Clarence Daniels (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) combined for 60 points as the University of New Hampshire men’s basketball team took down UMass Lowell, 89-73 on Saturday evening from UML’s Costello Gym.

Baker scored a career high 28 points while Daniels scored 32 and collected 12 rebounds for his ninth double double of the season.

The Wildcats’ record improves to 13-8 (5-3 AE) and UMass Lowell’s fall to 15-6  (6-2 AE).

Daniels and grad student forward Naim Miller (Pittsburgh, Pa.) sank back-to-back three-point shots to take a 37-33 lead and force a River Hawk timeout with 4:36 to go in the half.

Two more points from Daniels and a three from Baker extended the Wildcat lead to five, 42-37 with 2:01 remaining. Baker knocked down two free throws with under a minute left to bring the ‘Cats to the largest lead of the half, 46-39.

The ‘Cats came out hot, extending the lead to 12, 51-39, with a layup from junior guard Ahmad Robinson (West Orange, N.J.) and a three from junior forward Trey Woodyard (London, Ohio). The River Hawks scored seven unanswered to close the gap, but Daniels responded with nine points of his own to hold the Wildcat lead.

UNH kept the offense coming, breaking open the lead to 20, 79-59, with 6:27 left in the game.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

NORTHEASTERN 4, UNH 3 (OT)

Northeastern’s Katy Knoll scored 26 seconds into the extra session to end the game at Matthews Arena for the 13th ranked Huskies.

Senior forward Nicole Kelly scored two goals for UNH while freshman goaltender Sedona Blair made 14 of her 27 saves in the third period. She also recorded her first career assist. Kelly scored UNH’s first and third goals and grad student Jada Christian netted the Wildcats’ other goal.

Besides Knoll, Lily Shannon (one goal, two assists), Taze Thompson (goal, assist) and Megan Carter (two assists) led the Huskies’ offense. Gwyneth Philips made 28 saves.

UNH moves to 12-14-2 overall and 9-10-2 in Hockey East. Northeastern is now 20-9-1, 13-7-1. The Wildcats return to action Friday (6 p.m.) at Merrimack College.

MEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 3, MERRIMACK 1

Speaking of Merrimack, the Wildcats got a goal by Robert Cronin 87 seconds into the contest at the Whit and never looked back vs. the Warriors. Cronin added two assists on the night.

Harrison Blaisdell scored, assisted by Cronin, at 11:56 of the third to make it 2-0 and the Wildcats added a goal by J.P. Turner, assisted by Cronin, at 17:47. UNH is now 14-9-1 overall, 7-6-1 in Hockey East. Merrimack fell to 10-16-1, 3-13-1 HE.
