UNH Roundup: BU tops ‘Cat skaters; Bryant edges women’s hoop

BOSTON – Junior goaltender Jakob Hellsten (Ljusdal, Sweden) made 23 saves for the Wildcats but the No. 16 University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team fell to Boston University, 3-0, on Saturday evening at Agganis Arena in Hockey East action.

The Wildcats fall to 11-6-1 (4-3-1 Hockey East), while the Terriers improve to 14-4-1 (9-1-1 Hockey East). The season series is now tied at 1-1-0 as UNH defeated BU in the season opener 6-4 on Oct. 13. The regular season series will conclude on Friday, Feb. 2 at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex.

The first two periods went scoreless as the Wildcats outshot the Terriers, 27-17. At 11:25 of the third period, Sam Stevens gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead when he netted a goal stick side from the right faceoff circle.

Then just 38 seconds later, Macklin Celebrini sent a loose puck from the slot to the back of the net to increase the lead to 2-0.

The Wildcats went with an empty net with 2:55 remaining but with 1:57 left Celebrini scored for the 3-0 final.

The Wildcats return to action for a home-and-home series versus UConn. UNH will play at UConn on Friday, Jan. 19, and then return home for a game versus the Huskies on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNH 3, BOSTON COLLEGE 2 (SHOOTOUT)

Lee freshman forward Julia Cabrals cored in the top half of the seventh round of the shootout and freshman goalie Sedona Blair turned aside BC’s shot in the bottom half to lift the Wildcats to a 1-0 shooutout win against 13th ranked Boston College at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex. The game officially ended in a 2-2 tie through 60 minutes of regulation and a five-minute overtime session.

Blair had 31 stops throughout the game and that included 16 stops in the third period and two more in OT. Although not credited as saves, she also turned aside all seven shootout attempts.

Alyson Hush scored her first collegiate goal to give the Wildcats the 2-1 lead in the second period after Kira Juodikis had tied the game 1-1.

BC goalie Grace Campbell made 28 saves. Sammy Smigliani and Sammy Taber scored the Eagles’ goals.

UNH moves to 10-10-2 overall and 7-6-2 in Hockey East. BC is now 12-7-3, 11-3-3.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BRYANT 89, UNH 74

Senior forward Clarence Daniels and junior guard Ahmad Robinson both scored 18 points for the Wildcats but they fell at Lundholm Gym to 9-7 (1-2 AE) and Bryant ­improves to 11-7 (3-0 AE).

Leading 44-40 coming out of halftime, Bryant extended its lead to 56-44 with 16:31 remaining in the half. With 11:31 left in the game, the Bulldogs continued the scoring, advancing to a 67-56 lead.  

The ‘Cats hit the road to NJIT on Thursday, Jan. 18th with a 7 p.m. tip off.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

BRYANT 55, UNH 54

Halfway through the final quarter, the Bulldogs went on a small run giving them their biggest lead of the half with five points.

The Wildcats (6-11, 0-4 AE) were able to tie up the game with just 36 seconds remaining thanks to a jumper from sophomore guard Breezie Williams.

The Bulldogs (9-8, 2-2 AE) once again were able to take a one-point lead with a made foul shot. The ‘Cats were unable to score in the remaining seconds of the game and the Bulldogs took the game by one.

Breezie Williams led UNH with 12 points while Adara Gorman added 11.

The Wildcats will return home on Thursday vs. NJIT.
