Another chapter in the Patriots novel takes place today

By Tom King - Staff Writer | Dec 17, 2023

Well, what will add to the New England Patriots drama at Gillette Stadium today?

Will there be a Taylor Swift sighting and anything related? Will the Kansas City Chiefs get mad at the refs once again?

Will Bill Belichick be asked for the 1,000th time if he wants to, or thinks he will be coaching the Patriots beyond this season?

You know there will be some twist. Belichick has one goal these days and one goal only, which is win games. That’s all he’s ever been about.

Where will he end up next year? It likely won’t be here. It certainly looks like the Los Angeles Chargers opened their door, not by firing head coach Brandon Staley, because that was a given. They also canned their GM Tom Telesco, which certainly paves the way for a double hire in Belichick. We’ll see.

One thing’s for sure, there will be some sort of twist today. There always is, even if it’s just as simple as upsetting the Chiefs. The Patriots got out of their awful rut with a win over the Steelers – who are in free fall, losing again yesterday – so let’s see what happens today.

Meanwhile, we’re in our own 3-4 rut. The Patriots would have loved to have been 3-4 two months ago, right?

Here’s our attempt to get out of it:

CHIEFS 24, PATRIOTS 17

Yes, this will be a close one. Kansas City will get two TDs from Travis Kelce and score over 21 points for just the fifth time this season. Taylor Swift will be shown 1,000 times by CBS while Pop Douglas will be called for offensive off-sides, negating the potential game-tying TD.

DOLPHINS 27, JETS 10

People on New York sports radio actually think the Jets are going to win this game, as they suddenly have Zach Wilson Fever. Hate to tell you, but Wilson isn’t that good and the Dolphins aren’t going to lose two straight at home.

RAVENS 20, JAGUARS 17

If the Ravens really want to be the Super Bowl favorite in the conference, they need to win this game. Heck, if the Browns can beat the Jags – who are still good – the Ravens should be able to, right?

EAGLES 27, SEAHAWKS 13

We keep hearing about the Eagles’ demise. It’s more like the Sea Doves demise, as they are starting to fade out of the NFC playoff race. They finish with Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Arizona, so we’ll see if Pete Carroll can pull it off.

SAINTS 17, GIANTS 10

Good grief, we’re Giant fans and we’re already tired of Tommy DeVito. He makes good plays here and there, doesn’t turn the ball over, but all the Saints have to do to stop him is get a linebacker to put an end to his QB rushes. Forget chicken cutlets, it’s crawfish time in NOLA.

BILLS 24, COWBOYS 21

It’s called being on the road, Cowboys. Not as much fun as being at home, especially in snowy, cold Buffalo. It’s also called the Bills really, really need this one.

BEARS 13, BROWNS 10

Could Chicago be Bill Belichick’s next destination? Not if they keep winning. Flacco finally falls flat after signing his contract for the rest of the season.

LAST WEEK: 3-4.

SEASON: 61-37
